Since the beginning, Calyxta has always believed in enabling, enriching, and empowering women. This has been part of our core values ever since we launched in 2014. Which is why we stand with this year’s International Women’s Day theme: Each for Equal; or I am Generation Equality—an initiative that calls for change and advancing gender equality worldwide.

In our final interview with #CalyxtaGirl, Kylie Verzosa, she talks about her thoughts on the progression of women making their own mark in the world, issues we still need to resolve especially for the next generation, and how to empower women (especially Filipinas) to overcome their struggles.

This March, we’re celebrating International Women’s Month with the theme #EachForEqual: an equal world is an enabled world. It’s all about calling for change and celebrating the courageous acts of women who played an extraordinary role in their own countries and communities.

A lot of women still experience being belittled, discriminated and unappreciated whether it be in their own careers or personal life. How would you empower these women in overcoming these kinds of struggles?

Knowing their rights as a human and knowing their rights as a woman. We have equal rights just as men do. And I guess don’t be afraid to speak up. Sometimes, especially with Asian Culture, we’re so quiet and timid. But the thing is, we have a voice and sometimes, that’s the only thing that matters—to just say your piece. Don’t be afraid to speak up—especially if you know it’s wrong, especially if you know it’s right, especially if you deserve it. I think all women are fighting for the same thing. We all want to be respected.

As a woman, what are important traits you want other women to have instilled with them through these trying times?

To own who they are. It’s okay to change. It’s okay to evolve. I mean—it’s progress, not perfection. I’m still learning about myself. I’m still constantly changing myself, and I guess we’re all fighting for the same cause. We’re all beautiful. We’re always fighting for something. So use your voice. Speak up.

February has always highlighted celebrating love with our significant others. But we at Calyxta have consistently been big believers of self-love, which we know isn’t about indulging in wine, bubble baths, or face masks—but more so being kind to ourselves, acknowledging our vulnerabilities, and yet still choosing to move forward and do better.

And this cover story focuses on just that. #CalyxtaGirl, Kylie Verzosa, is a self-love starter who shares that it’s important to put yourself and your needs first. In our interview, Kylie talks about developing self-love through various means and debunking the notion that self-love is a glamorous and indulgent journey.

February is the month of love and yet self-love can be underrated. For you, what does self-love mean and why is it essential?

Self-love means you can be selfish at times. Sometimes, it’s very important to think of yourself first. I always say, “How can you give love (to others) if you don’t have love for yourself?” So, it’s important to always put yourself and your needs first, before anyone else. Self-love is treating yourself nicely; talking to yourself nicely; accepting who you are including your flaws, and I guess learning how to spend time by yourself. I’m an introvert so naturally, I love spending time with myself—and this is the time I use to reflect and set my goals.

The art of self-love can be developed through various means depending on your own lifestyle and personality. How do you cultivate a deep and loving relationship with yourself? What are some hobbies and interests that help put your self-love into practice?

I love music. I love listening to music. Music grounds me. It can set the mood. It can set the tone whether I’m acting or I’m just doing a photo shoot. Music can set the tone of what I want to be or where I want to be. I love reading books as well. Because sometimes, I have a difficult time trying to find the right words–so when I read a phrase or when I read something that resonates with me, I’m like, “Oh, she gets me.” I love self-help books. When I read, I always want to learn. But recently, I also got into reading more fiction. I love Paulo Coelho books because, for some reason, his books are always in the female point of view.

Never look for validity online. I’m actually glad that there’s this movement now where Instagram has been hiding likes, and I’ve experienced it because I handle Mental Health Matters and for some reason, it hides likes but on my personal page, I still see likes. I feel like it’s so much more peaceful when I don’t see likes because we tend to see the numbers. Know that what people post online is the perfect version of everything; the perfect version of themselves. What I want them to know is to find their own beauty or know that even without social media or even without validation, that they are valuable.

Being a beauty queen and actress comes with prestige as well as responsibility. You were gifted a platform wherein you can use your influence and voice to create a positive impact on other people’s lives. Besides taking care of one’s mental health, what are other advocacies that are close to your heart?

I really care about the environment. I try to consume only what I can. I also don’t eat a lot of meat because I know how strenuous that is for the environment. I try to do simple things. Like when I go to the grocery or when I do buy something, the simplest act like, “Ma’am, paper bag?” I’m like, “No, it’s fine. I can carry it, or I can put it in my bag.” What else? I love children. I have to say I love children. Any opportunity I get to help them or make them happy even just for a second, I’ll take the chance. I love anything in the fitness category. I’d join a fun run if I could, and if I do have time. What else? If there was an opportunity for me to save the oceans, or do an ocean clean up, I would. I’d take it. Those are the things I’m passionate about.

When I started as Calyxta’s Managing Editor in July 2017, I wanted to continue the online magazine’s initiative of featuring women who weren’t just beautiful on the outside, but more so on the inside. I know it seems cliché, but this is precisely the reason why our cover stories, in one way or another, always include an advocacy or a story that shows just how human our cover girls are.

Days before our editorial shoot with current #CalyxtaGirl, Kylie Verzosa, I remember brainstorming on the interview questions with my team, and thinking to myself, “Wow, I can’t wait to sit down and really get to know Kylie on a deeper level.” And this particular cover story of hers is perhaps my favorite, because it hits very close to home. I was so grateful that Kylie was more than willing to share her experiences, and it really did move me to see how much she’s in a better place and a healthier state of mind.

We tackled topics to hopefully end the stigma on mental health, and aside from advice to those who are too afraid to seek professional help, she also shared ideas to those who have loved ones currently going through depression.

You created your own organization entitled Mental Health Matters because you wanted to spread awareness on mental health and end the stigma. What are your plans for it this year?

I think we’re on our 4th or 3rd year now. Actually, we started on Facebook. It started as a support group. It wasn’t anything much—I actually just wanted to share the articles that helped me through my depression, because I learned a lot online, and I had to research what I had and how to cure it naturally, or what were the best ways to get over it.

So, this is a place where I shared articles that helped me and then in a way, I also wanted to build a group where people felt like they belonged, or where people felt that, “Hey, I’m not alone,” because that’s the one thing that helped me heal right away—knowing that I’m not alone or that someone’s going through the journey with me, or someone is experiencing the same thing that I’m experiencing. So, the community alone has helped. I think we’re a growing community of around 5,000—it’s super active until now. I have a few volunteers who are constantly responding. You know, we get hundreds of messages a day, and sometimes if you look at it, I have to admit that it’s a bit draining. Like it makes me sad, because mabigat siya. Mabigat siya sa puso. I can only go there maybe once a week and check what’s happening, but otherwise, I get people to help me with it. My plans for it—hopefully in the future, I finally make it into a foundation. We’ve had two major events where we gathered people who are remarkable in the mental health industry, and we gave talks. Members of my organization still go around schools maybe every month. We talk about mental health, positive attitude, and self-love.

Many are still afraid of seeking help when it comes to dealing with depression. Instead of getting treatment and help, they remain silent. As an active mental health advocate, what tips would you give for individuals who are trying to cope with depression?

Don’t be ashamed about it. Seek professional help. I think that’s one thing that has also helped me a lot. When I sought professional help. I think it’s very important because sometimes, especially the younger kids today, they can be stubborn. They don’t want to listen to either of their parents, they don’t want to listen to their friends. Sometimes, having someone professional to talk to gets them to listen when they’re diagnosed. Two, listen to what they prescribe to you—whether it’s medication or whether it’s time off from work or from school. And then, it’s very important to have a good support system. Like, I personally had to alienate myself from people who I thought were bringing me down. It’s very important for you to be aware, and when you’re depressed, you tend to cling on to people or things, that you have a difficult time with your decision-making. So, talking to someone or going through therapy is crucial. A psychiatrist or psychologist will do that, and there’s really no shame in going.

There are many misconceptions about mental illnesses, especially from older generations. What are the common misconceptions you’d like to further educate people about?

So many! When they talk about mental health, the first image they see is probably someone baliw, a crazy person on the street, or taong grasa. When they say, “May sakit sa ulo, dalhin na yan sa mental.” They may be the extreme cases of mental health, but it’s not everything. It’s just that mental health is so broad, but right now what the youth are facing are anxiety and depression. So I think we need to educate the older generation that that one is real. It needs to be treated, before it gets worse. Because if left untreated, this can lead to suicide. And yeah, to just be more understanding of it.

It’s a bit surreal that we’re suddenly ushering in a new decade, when it seems just like yesterday that I was listening to The Only Exception by Paramore, and watching Disney’s Tangled on my laptop—both of which are turning 10 years old this 2020.

2020 also marks my 3rd anniversary as Calyxta’s Managing Editor, which to be honest, has always been one of my greatest dreams come true. From the moment I put together my first cover girl concept featuring Lauren Reid, to growing the roster of inspiring and empowered #CalyxtaGirls who all had the most unique stories to share, each one has been a truly humbling and memorable experience—and our next cover girl is no different.

On the day of our editorial shoot, she showed up makeup-free with immaculate skin, and wearing just a black hoodie and jeans. Her arrival had been so quiet, that I didn’t even realize she was already seated on Anthea Bueno’s makeup chair, until I entered the makeup area of CreativX Studio to offer her glam team coffee. It was only then that we shook hands, and in her airy voice and reserved demeanor, she thanked us for having her be our next #CalyxtaGirl.

Opening the new decade for us is none other than Kylie Verzosa, who brought in a subdued kind of strength that makes you gravitate towards her to draw in a similar energy.

She was truthfully one of the easiest cover girls to work with, and remained bright and bubbly despite being sick that day. Though she had early signs of the flu, she powered through and made it seem like it was nothing—even walking around the studio barefoot in between takes or change of layouts. And in the moments where we paused to study Charismo Lico’s photos, Kylie would gush about the makeup looks we picked out and how much she loved them.

“You are so good!” our team would tell her, to which she would reply, “No, it’s because everyone is so good. This was a team effort.” It was this authenticity that made our interview as easy-going as her shoot (her ability to channel different auras for each layout was a spectacle to watch).

In her first cover story for Calyxta, Kylie opens up about her most fulfilling achievements in the last decade, her biggest challenges and the valuable lessons she’s learned, and the goals she wants to achieve for 2020. And just like that, a decade has gone by.

Looking back at those 10 years, what are some of your biggest or most fulfilling achievements?

10 years. Wow. I guess first graduating college. I graduated from Ateneo. I took up Business Management. And then, I guess trying out different career paths. I tried Corporate Marketing first, and then eventually different things. I ventured out to be a volunteer pre-school teacher, and then into modeling—which took me around Southeast Asia. And then after that, I tried to find my own voice which I found in pageantry. But it wasn’t the easiest road, because I had to lose. I had to fail to win again.

Every year, we go through a roller coaster of highs and lows. Can you share some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced and what are the valuable lessons you’ve gained from them? How have these challenges shaped you on a personal level?

Well, it’s never a comfortable feeling but you always learn something through failure or through your darkest times. There’s a lot to learn. And through all the silence, and all the pain—I use it in my art, or I use it as (in Filipino terms) “hugot.” And it’s in these moments where you can reflect, and you get to learn. Often, we just celebrate the happy moments. But I think there’s always beauty in the times we struggle.

Was there anything that happened over the past 10 years that you wish to undo? If you were given the chance, what would you have done differently?

I’m always so grateful for everything that’s happened to me, and even if they’re uncomfortable moments or even if they’re the moments we wish that didn’t happen, we always learn from them. I always try to find the beauty in everything.

Just in time to celebrate Calyxta’s 5th anniversary this December, #CalyxtaGirl, KC Concepcion, dons a sapphire ensemble meant to symbolize the gem that marks this truly special milestone. Sapphires, often gifted during fifth anniversaries, represent wisdom and good fortune—-two things that the actress and aspiring gemologist evidently gained throughout the years, and especially after her hiatus (Read: Finding Strength in Silence). Wisdom—-from choosing to focus on passion projects that brought out her most authentic self, and good fortune—-from working hard and living each day with a grateful heart.

Like KC, Calyxta had its own share of hurdles since its birth in December 2014. Yet despite all the challenges and obstacles thrown both our ways, one thing is certain: we share the same resilience and tenacity that has pushed us to evolve and be where we are today.

In our last cover story with KC, who looked absolutely stunning in all four sapphire-inspired layouts, she talks about what she’s most thankful for this year, the little victories worth celebrating, and what she plans to do next!

What are you most thankful for this year and what are the little victories you’d like to celebrate?

My freedom! God really sustained me for three and a half years. Also, I’m thankful that my family is okay. Frankie is in college, and my mom is happy. I’m very thankful for my freedom, and being able to have my business that’s different (on top of my work as an actress). I always prayed for my business. Some actors have their perfume or taxi business, others have restaurants, and I’m just like, “OMG. You guys are amazing!” And others have their own makeup line, and I’m just like, “What can I do?” And now, I have my own—-even if it’s private and personal and small, there are loyal clients and people who want a piece of that. They understand that it’s not a big corporation. It’s just me who’s making it, and people want a piece of what we make. So I’m very thankful. Plus I like that my family is happy and financially good. When you grow up in a privileged world, it doesn’t mean that you’ll just sit there and depend on other people. I was always taught that everything could disappear. I’m really thankful my mom taught me this.

We’re down to the third cover story of #CalyxtaGirl, KC Concepcion, and you might have already seen a few teaser posts of her ultra-chic denim-on denim-on-denim OOTD exquisitely put together by her go-to stylist, Adrianne Concepcion. The pop of red on her lips, done by makeup artist, Gery Penaso, gives the whole ensemble a nice, vibrant color (click here to read how you can get this look!).

In her first cover story, we focused on KC taking a break from the limelight, while her second cover highlights who she is behind the cameras and social media. This time, we sat down and talked about her philosophies in terms of health and wellness, her life-changing experiences as a UN World Food Program Ambassador, and another very special advocacy close to her big heart.

How do you start your day?

So after Juday gave me a food processor, I started making green juices. I am a breakfast person and I cannot process without breakfast and black coffee (French press!). I get 100% Arabica. I do yoga, I have private classes in the morning, and then that’s it. Obviously, I shower every day and keep clean. Whether it’s my bed, bod,y or my room. When I tidy up, it’s like a gesture that today’s an organized day. I always moisturize even if I step out for a bit. I also put lipstick—like a bright red lipstick.

Is there a certain skin care routine that you follow?

I use makeup with skin care. What’s the point of using skin care if you’re using makeup that are gunky? I always take my makeup off at night or in the middle of the day.

As a UN World Food Program Ambassador, you travel to different places. During these visits, you were able to immerse yourself and help feed families. Can you tell us about your experiences, and the biggest realization that you picked up?

Those missions are life changing. You don’t have to look far to see that people don’t live the same way. If you are so moved to share anything, then know that you can. I remember clearly—when I left for Africa, I saw the real faces of famine. People create houses from clay and mud, and there was scarcity of food sources. It was so hard to see. And then there was Cotabato, and I saw similar things. The day after, I had to go to the studio and get glammed up, and I was culture shocked. That was the moment I realized how opposite our worlds are. I think it’s important to open up your eyes. You don’t need to grow up hungry, or you don’t need to be sick to empathize or care about diseases. You don’t have to go through hardship to be part of a cure or be able to help. It’s subjective—people are drawn to their own causes. You don’t have to put it up on people’s faces. It’s one thing I was able to do. To share the stories with a hope that people will not forget that there are pockets in the world that are like that. Even in our own country. You don’t want to forget and turn a blind eye—it’s just awareness.

Are there other advocacies and causes that are close to your heart?

Yeah, I’m a diver, and I grew up bonding over it with my father—so the memories that we have were always at the beach. Even if he’s not with me, whenever I talk about the ocean, he’s part of that. I’m sensitive about the marine environment and life. That’s one of the things that I’m getting into this year. Coral rehabilitations and the wellness of marine life.

Being KC Concepcion ultimately has its perks. Born into a family of showbiz royalty, opportunities have easily presented themselves left and right as she was growing up—and yet, despite everything, she chooses to earn what she has rather than having everything handed over. Such was the case when she bought her very own unit in New York with the money she saved from all her acting projects.

Because we know how much you love your dogs, can you tell us more about Churro and Chica? Who do they stay with when you’re jet-setting around the world?

Yeah, it’s the first time that I was actually mature enough to decide to have these dogs. Growing up, we were given pets and I’m so appreciative of that. But at the same time, I realized I would never give anyone a dog because it’s a lot of responsibility. Dogs aren’t toys, they’re family. And now that I’ve taken that responsibility, during my break, that was the time I got my dogs. Because I had time to take care of them. I wanted to be a fur mom. When I leave, of course they have a Ninang who takes care of them. She’s like the pet guru, the dog guru, who’s a good friend of mine, and also my neighbor. But apart from that, my assistant also takes care of them. We’re constantly on Facetime to update.

With all the projects you’ve been doing, for sure there are times that it took a toll on you emotionally, physically, and mentally. How do you manage balancing things while maintaining your personal and private life?

Like all other artists, we’re all on the same boat. All of us are going through the same thing and we understand each other. Our job is not normal—we’re not corporate. So people in our industry understand the emotional vulnerability that we all go through. I think it’s about surrounding yourself with people who will not judge you, and who understand the demands of your profession—which are a different skill set and demand compared to a corporate job. It’s a job that chooses you. It’s a different job. So it’s healthy to surround yourself with people from the industry, but it’s also healthy to surround yourself with people who aren’t from that world—just so that you’re still in touch with reality.

Being a media personality brings a fair share of both love and hate. How do you deal with the negativity?

It depends on what level of negativity. If it’s bashers online, it’s normal. You just delete and block. But if it’s in real life na binabastos ka na, then that’s a different story. I’m glad that there are laws already where you can sue people if it’s becoming more serious. But I’m like my worst critic. So if you say something negative about me, I just laugh it off, because I’m worse than you when it comes to criticizing myself—which isn’t always a good thing, but in a way I’m like, “Oo, ako rin naman. I didn’t want to—let’s say, gain weight. I can’t fit the clothes that I love, and if someone tells me that, I’m like—yeah, I know. But if it’s talking bad about the person that I love, then it’s unfair because you’re obviously just spiting them. At the end of the day, I just pray for them. And I just have my green juice, or my Vitamin C and probiotics, and still be in a much better mood than they are—so who loses?

With a strong yet quiet presence, KC Concepcion entered the studio with a cheery smile on her face. Despite the unpredictable rain during that Friday afternoon of our shoot, KC’s energy was more than enough to brighten an otherwise gloomy weather (perhaps it’s her love for black coffee that prompts such a sunny disposition). She immediately greeted her glam team—the same ones seen in her Instagram stories a few days in a row that week. Her schedule had been packed shooting for other magazine covers and a new endorsement, and after teasing it on her Instagram, KC was formally launched as the first ever Filipina to be the brand ambassador of Shiseido just a couple of days after our cover girl shoot.

Between the hectic schedule of attending classes in New York and then flying home for work in Manila, I almost couldn’t believe that KC Concepcion would close Calyxta’s quarterly editorial issue. I remember back in high school when I used to purchase every magazine that had KC on their cover—I loved reading her stories, especially the ones that talked about her studies in Paris. More than her career in the show business industry, what drew me to her were her travels and the different cultures and experiences she was exposed to. It was inspiring to see a Filipina making waves in other parts of the world, and really maximizing her opportunities outside her comfort zone.

Without talking about her familial background nor the limelight that was always there, KC Concepcion has become a household name in her own right. Through the years, she carved a path that was completely her own—hustling and doing everything and anything she can to figure out who she is and what she wants, and then learning to trim things down to really focus on what passions and projects make her feel the happiest and most authentic.

In our first cover, our newest #CalyxtaGirl talks about just that—her belief in educating herself before diving deep into something (in her case, taking up a course in Gematology and Jewelry Design to further strengthen the launch of her brand, Avec Moi Jewelry), her thought process behind taking a break when needed, and learning which of her plans and passion projects to prioritize.

We heard you’ve been focusing on other ventures and part of that was moving abroad and studying jewelry and entrepreneurship. Can you tell us about your time there and the experiences that you had?

So, that’s what brought me to Gemology and Jewelry Design. I like making butingting, and fashion has always been a big part of the lives of the women in my family. From my grandma who has always been a fashionista—I would always raid her closet and play with all her Salvatore Ferragamo shoes, and stilettos, and makeup, and clothes, and everything. My love for fashion has always been contrived in a way because of my body image and I felt that jewelry was for any shape and size, and any kind of woman could wear it. So that’s what got me to the States and the school. My mom always encouraged me to pursue this, so that’s also one of my driving forces. Now, I enjoy living the life of being based in two cities—Manila and New York.

Do you have plans of studying abroad again?

It’s continuous. It’s basically a whole year. It’s nine courses, and I’m almost halfway done but not yet—because I have to fly home for work. I’m a working student in that sense. It’s a lot of commitment. It takes a lot of determination and focus. I’ve learned to categorize, “Okay, this is number one. This is number two.” Of course, in our job, opportunities come. Like one day, I was posting on Instagram stories, the next day the brand that I was posting about got me as their endorser. You never know. But definitely, the focus is there, and my drive is there. It gives me a chance to have other facets in life—like a diamond has many facets! I just came from New York two weeks ago for work because I have two shoots and a new endorsement, and then I’m going back next week to do some lab classes. But I love that life. I’ve always dreamt of having this life. I don’t want to be in a gilded cage. But—there’s also focus and direction. I see a lot of people who don’t really know where they’re going. I was taught not to look left or look right—just focus.

Given that you live such a busy lifestyle, what’s your thought process behind knowing when to take a break and re-centering yourself?

I’ve gotten better at that because I was really like a soldier for a decade, and I liked it. I liked following, being told what to do and where to go, and just showing up and performing.

What advice can you give those who are juggling several projects at the same time?

I have this tendency that I’m not able to reply to people right away, and I realize it’s because I don’t have the mental bandwidth to do so. My advice is to just keep observing and making a check and balance of your mental and emotional bandwidth because we all have a limit. And don’t be guilty if you travel or take breaks. I noticed that in our culture, there’s a travel or a vacation guilt, and why? Europeans work like 10 to 11 months a year for that 1 or 2 months of vacation. There shouldn’t be guilt because you’re taking a break. But also, get back on and know what you need to do when you’re back. So, I think it’s just to focus. Like what I said, “Don’t look left, don’t look right.” It’s better to saturate one or two things rather than doing ten million things which is what I used to do. I was singing, dancing, acting, and hosting every single day. It’s great, but at the end of the day, I didn’t know myself anymore. But it’s good. I’m not saying to younger artists don’t do it. I don’t regret it. I’m so glad I did that. But—saturate one to three things max and get better and better at that.

When we planned this shoot, we knew we wanted to make a statement: that it’s no longer just a man’s world. Nor is it just a woman’s world. It’s now a world where people of varied sexualities and gender identities exist, and we will no longer be silent; we will no longer be powerless. I was most excited for this layout specifically because it felt like such a power move to portray both masculinity and femininity in front of a recognizable symbol for cis men: the male urinal. What I did not anticipate, though, was for this to mean something more in the months to proceed after this shoot.

Since August this year, the comfort room issue has become much bigger for LGBTQ+ individuals in the Philippines. Comfort rooms are no longer just a place to relieve yourself, but a symbol of a place in this world which the LGBTQ+ community is staking its claim on.

Issa Pressman donning modern Daenerys Targaryen-esque regalia (a majestic dress made of blue sweater material which drapes over one arm like a cape, ear jewelry, and half-blonde hair pulled back in twists and braids), radiating strength and confidence, and poised in front of a urinal no longer just feels like an “F.U.” to masculine and feminine dichotomies of gender expectations. It feels even more of a power move now; it’s as if she’s reclaiming power from a world that puts men and masculinity on a pedestal, and looks down on women and queer people.

crush on another girl, I’ll say bad stuff about that girl. I was that girl before, until one day, I was like, “This isn’t helping myself in any way.” I’m just creating this negative thing inside of me, until I met real friends. Honestly, it’s good to choose your friends. If you’re smart enough to choose your own friends, you should, because you get to know how to surround yourself with positive energy, with good people. If you think that person isn’t doing well for you, then you tell them, but then if it doesn’t change, then maybe create distance if you feel like there’s negativity around them. That’s how I did it for myself, you know?

I did also go through that college-high school drama where I was hated by my best friend. So I was like, “Oh, okay. I need to find real people who actually accept me if I change, or if I choose this kind of path and who won’t judge me.” And by creating that positive energy, you just become an extra positive person as well.

What did you learn about yourself after finding yourself in that process? Who is Issa Pressman now?

Issa’s just a more genuine and honest girl. One main reason I tell my friends why I stopped showbusiness even before I really got into it is because—showbusiness right now, they have a particular way, you know? If for example, you haven’t slept the whole day and if you haven’t eaten, and then you just snap a little bit, people are going to take that against you. They’re going to be like, “You have no right to do that, kasi hindi ka sikat.” But I’m like, “Where’s the justice in that? But what if you’re really tired?” It’s my personality that if I’m tired, I’ll tell you in a proper way like, “Yo, wait. Maybe we need a break,” or whatever. Or if they keep taking pictures of my sister, I’m like, “Hey, you guys could ask permission. She’ll say yes. Just don’t do it discreetly.” And I’ll be honest. I can’t hide my feelings.

What can you say to those people who are struggling to find themselves, whether it’s in terms of sexuality or self-expression? What can you suggest to help them become more confident in themselves?

I think it’s to be more careless. But also, be more responsible. I’m not saying careless—as in pabaya. Careless because you just have to not be so conscious, but then responsible by not stepping on anyone. Being responsible is being smart about your movements, and not looking down on anyone else. And then—put yourself on top. You are your own priority above anyone else. Don’t think of what they might think. I mean, I know some people can be like, “Oh, they might not like me,” or whatever, but then if you embrace yourself and be your own self, people are going to admire you for you. The “you” is going to come out, you know?

But then, we can’t deny the fact that for some people, it’s hard for them to find this because of their environment, and how close-minded it can be.

Yeah.

Are there any personal practices you do to keep yourself centered, and to keep yourself inspired?

Recently, I’ve been doing yoga! I’ve just been doing it at home. When I started, other people were like, “Oh, yoga! It makes your soul dadada….”, but when I started, I was getting bored. But then, it’s true when you find an actual center, and you find peace, and you breathe. It’s good to meditate. It’s a way to recharge you. I’m starting to apply that when I’m panicking, or when I’m dealing with stuff. You need to breathe. Stop and breathe. You need to find this way of breathing in all of the good energy, but when you exhale you breathe out all of the bad ones, and you feel it, and then just give it ten seconds. Just breathe then relax, and then you get back on track.

I would tell myself to be closer to your dad. Because it’s only recently that I’ve been very sweet with my dad. It’s crazy how time passes pala talaga, and my dad is 90. I have no time to waste. Like if I have to be close, be close. If I could’ve started younger, I would, and it’s crazy. It’s so scary when you put something on a calendar and you become so excited like, “It’s six months away!” My best friend, when she got married, I was like “Ooh, I’m going to be Maid of Honor,” and marked it on my calendar, and that was like 8 or 7 months away, and now they’re going to celebrate their anniversary soon. It’s crazy how time just goes by. If I could’ve told myself to be closer to my dad earlier, I would. But it’s never too late to start. I did it a couple of years back, and now I’m happy.

Let’s see! Maybe more music, because I’m getting into it little by little. Because it has always been a hobby. I love singing, but I would only sing in my bathroom. (laughs) I wouldn’t even sing in friends’ karaoke, but I really want to! I have that feeling. And because it’s something that I find myself wanting to do, maybe I should explore it a little bit more. Also, definitely getting back to art, because I stopped for a long, long while. Then hopefully more travels, because I love how in one place, you leave a piece of you, but you gain another. That’s how it is for me. There are feelings, memories, attitudes, or traits that I just drop there—and then I learn from something or somewhere in that country, and then I come home a different person.

If anyone knows how to curate an Instagram feed, it’s our #CalyxtaGirl, Issa Pressman. With inspiring travel outfits and OOTDs, I suddenly have the need to throw out my entire closet, set it on fire, and start over. But let’s be real—I’m neither courageous enough nor willing enough to spend, but one can dream!

Throughout our cover shoot, Issa constantly gave us more and more reason to adore her. Like a true chameleon, she took each look that our talented glam team put together, and made it her own—from a bright yellow lid to a muted smoky eye; she rocked it all with ease. Talent, creativity in the arts, and impeccable style aside, she shows us her wholehearted belief in respecting and embracing everyone’s individuality: style, sexuality, beauty routines, and all!

Can you walk us through your usual beauty routine?

Yay, beauty! Okay, so before—for skincare—I thought that the less you put, the better. I thought I had super sensitive skin, so I stuck with gentle cleansers like Cetaphil, and then I tried other stuff. I did the complete routine of toner, moisturizer, eye cream, face mist—all of that, until I finally found the right products for my face. That’s the thing! One reminder before I say my usual routine is that it doesn’t work for everyone. We all have different skin types. For my skin type, I’m a combination of oily and dry. I wake up in the morning, and wash my face with water only! Then I have breakfast and do whatever, and when I take a shower, before I head out, I put my moisturizer and a bit of face mist.

At night is when it takes super long. I first use micellar water, or whatever that I could remove my makeup with if I wear makeup, then I use my facial wash, and then toner, and then after that I put my midnight oil, and then I put my night moisturizer, and then eye cream under the eye area, and then, every now and then, face masks. So yeah, for me, when it comes to a skin care routine, the night routine is the best. It’s like a mini pamper session after a long day!

Since you said that skin care depends on the person, do you see a big difference between your skin care and Marga’s skin care?

Hmm—yes. She uses less. I tell her sometimes, “Oh, let’s put moisturizer, or toner!” I’m the boss when it comes to that! (laughs)

Yes! Power dressing, strong dressing, power dressing and then she can also go super boho, or super girly—but then she could also go sexy fierce, you know? So maybe that’s why I was under that kind of influence. Before I would search, “Vanessa Hudgens black top,” or whatever, and then I’ll copy how she matched it up. But then now, I kind of have more of my own sense of style.

My style types are like @llifeisapigsty on Instagram, and umm…who else? @double3xposure, who also mixes and matches. I really like Dua Lipa  though, but then it’s not my style. I like it, but it’s not my peg.

What are your thoughts on gender-based beauty? Like gendering fashion, gendering skin care beauty—what do you think about that?

For me, beauty is for everyone, you know? That’s why when I make videos or I post a video, I never say, “For the ladies who love makeup” because it’s not just the ladies. Sometimes, I even say, “Ladies, and Ladies at Heart.” Or something like, “Makeup’s for everyone!” I actually find it so cute when boys and gays put on makeup. Beauty is for everyone. I remember what Patrick Starr said and I’ll never forget that when I watched him: “Makeup is a one size fits all!”

You mentioned Patrick Starr. Him and other queer icons have been getting a lot more visibility in the fashion and beauty industry. Where do you think the future of beauty standards, and the beauty industry is, given that?

Diversity. Variation. I hope that one day people are just going to be clueless to the word “gender bias” or “sexists.” I want one day for my kid to ask me when she’s 20, 25, or 30 years old, “What’s the meaning of sexism?” You know? Like, “What is that?”

Because it doesn’t exist anymore.

Yeah, because it doesn’t exist anymore! You know why I have that thing in my head? Just recently someone was talking to me, and I’m 22, right? So someone was talking to me, and she was half-Taiwanese and half-European. She was getting bullied all her life growing up, and she was like, “How was it for you when you were young?” I was like, nothing, but now that I think about it, I remember when I was 16 or 17, I had to research what racist meant. You know—that’s how much I wasn’t aware of it because I never really categorized race, you know? It’s like, “Oh my god! It’s an issue pala!” And then I researched about it, and then I learned about it, and then man, it is a big deal! But then if imagine one day, right? Your daughter asks you, “What is sexist?” They’d have to Google it because it doesn’t exist.

This series of editorial covers housed many Calyxta firsts: first cover shoot done entirely in film (by the talented Erwin Canlas), first cover story done in commemoration of the recent #Pride2019 march, first shoot done entirely in the vicinity of the Calyxta HQ, and the first series of cover stories written by Calyxta’s #BoyInBeauty, Shawn Landayan, and myself.

With multiple talents in the arts, a solid sense of style and self, and a kind, loving nature to those around her, Issa Pressman easily cemented her spot not only as a #CalyxtaGirl, but as an extraordinary icon for generations to come.

There was just something about her poise, versatility, and affinity for the camera that each roll of film came out more stunning than the last. What I did love the most about having her as our cover girl was the lovable energy she brought around. From the moment she entered the office with her bright smile, split-dyed hair, and funky purple pants, the room buzzed with a newfound excitement. She cheerily greeted the whole crew, eating with no reservations from our tiny mountain of breakfast sandwiches, and was more than game to pose atop a scorching hot rooftop and (spoiler!) a cramped men’s urinal. There was nothing but positivity radiating off of her—from the small moments of politely asking for water, to her willingness to sneak around the guards down our street just to shoot more photos (pro tip: plan your guerilla shoots wisely!). Even throughout our interview, she was a breeze to talk to—the kind of person even an anxiety-ridden introvert like myself felt comfortable with!

To say I was surprised with how down-to-earth and grounded she was would be an understatement. Growing up alongside social media, I learned how easy it is to form opinions on people you’d never met. This is especially true in the age of influencers and celebrities, but meeting Issa reminds you that people are just people—no matter how stylish and gorgeous they are! It brings me back to a sentiment she said in her previous cover story: the more you create labels, the more tendency there is to create distance.

It’s so hard to be so technical about it. There’s normal stuff for other people, and for other people, it’s not. It’s just a fit for everyone.

What do you think is the effect of gender-based roles? 

For me, I think that’s when people hide their feelings more—because you don’t get to feel welcomed. But then, if you’re more vocal about it—for example, I had a best friend and they call her Sir, and then I remember another friend asking her, “Oh don’t you feel offended?” and she’s like, “No! I like it!” But then some people, if you call them sir, they also don’t like it, you know?

I mean, it’s a risk we have to take because these people, we don’t know them. We don’t get to tell them how you want to be addressed, because you’re not close to them. But that’s the thing! Shouldn’t people who are close to you really matter more? For example, if you have 10 friends, you tell your friends, “Oh, I’m gay and umm—call me sir.” I love that, you know? And then other people who aren’t close to you will call you “Miss.” It shouldn’t really affect you anymore, because these people aren’t close to you. You’re just going see them for one second and then after that, you won’t see them again. As long as the people around you are communicated to well, then it becomes better. Just be more vocal about it. Better communication lang with stuff.

Wrapping up our cover story on Janine Gutierrez to conclude the summer season, we list all the reasons why our #CalyxtaGirl is precisely #goals. First and foremost—one look at Janine’s dainty face and naturally dewy complexion makes everyone at the Calyxta HQ want to reach for that Sundays Sparklight Series. But more than anything, it’s her charm and grounded disposition that draws you in—which is certainly evident in our final interview on what she plans to do next this year.

Now that we’re ending the second quarter of the year, how has 2019 been?

Unexpectedly good—because at the end of 2018, I felt like I was kind of in a slump. I felt a little lost, so I didn’t really plan anything for 2019. I didn’t even have a New Year’s Resolution, which I usually do. As in I’m so particular about those things, that I write down everything. But this year, I didn’t plan anything. I had no expectations, then I got so busy with work. And I guess it was just sort of the universe’s way of telling me to just keep going, and now I feel super refocused! I guess it’s just really important to take breaks sometimes, so that you can check with yourself how you’re feeling, what you need to do to get yourself on track or just remember why you’re doing what you’re doing—so that you’re motivated and be on the right track.

What goes into your decision in choosing or doing projects/roles?

The story. It’s always the story. I think the story is the most important part. It doesn’t matter if it’s a big budget movie or a guerilla shoot. I feel like it’s always the story—if it’s something that I can relate to or I can connect with, or just makes me feel good, or even if it makes me feel bad! If it leaves a mark on you, and that feeling that you’re left with after reading it.
