Jess Wilson: On Lipstick, Mascaras, and Highlighters

Thriving before our eyes these past two weeks of July is our gorgeous Calyxta Girl, Jess Wilson. And while we’ve learned in our interviews how passionate she is with travel and beauty, we’ve also become privy to how her globetrotting family and innate sense of wander were the key influencers in her desire to explore beauty everywhere. This week, we delve deeper into Jess’ loves – lipstick and mascara, in particular – as we talk to her about an ongoing affair with her growing makeup collection.

Read on as the self-confessed makeup hoarder and former Product Manager of Lancome in the Philippines, Jess Wilson, opens up to Calyxta about all things beauty.

Let’s start with your daily makeup look.

I really don’t like wearing heavy foundation, and I truly prefer the “no-makeup” makeup for my daily look. I only add up lots of mascara to accentuate my eyes. I always go for a very fresh, natural look, but when I travel I usually do full-on makeup – for the photos!

So, you’re a big fan of mascaras.

I can say that! I don’t know why these days a lot of women tend to forget the fact that wearing mascara makes a huge difference on how they look. I think that it’s sad when you don’t wear mascara.

What’s your go-to mascara?

My favorite mascara now is the Maybelline Volume Express Hypercurl I’ve tried everything – the expensive ones and the cult-faves – but I always end up going back to Hypercurl. I find that it really grabs the lashes then pulls it, and so that’s what I look for – length and volume!

Are you also huge on falsies? Honestly, I always struggle with falsies. Each time, I try to pretend that I’m ready to put it on but then I’ll mess up my whole makeup. Plus, I always feel tired when I wear falsies because it feels heavy on my eyes. So, I just really load up on mascara, and I’m good.

Tell us about your lipstick collection.

I have a drawer filled with lipstick that’s like breaking apart (laughs). I’ve already cleaned it up – so many times – and I’ve already edited it down with the ones I’m not using and ready to let go. But, still, it’s a lot! The collection started to get bigger when I was working for L’Oreal and I’d bring home lipstick to review. Then, I usually add more when I travel and hoard stuff abroad.

Are you the type who can’t have enough lipstick?

I’ll always have one lipstick in my bag that I love and I’ll use it for some time, then I’ll let go of it. I’ll then shift my attention, and grab the next one, and then I’ll forget about that lipstick again. Several months later, I’ll be like “Oh, that was cute!” then I’ll bring that back to my current list.

What are the lipstick shades that you usually wear?

I always go with MLBB’s! I love the natural, fresh and very similar hues to my lip color yet more enhanced. Otherwise, I’ll go for like a strong red. I’m fascinated with the deep reds, deep blue, or like the orangey red. But sometimes, I’m also into peaches and corals.

What’s the best makeup a woman can wear?

Highlighter! I think highlighter draws attention and light to the face. When I wear highlighter, people always wonder why there’s such a different kind of glow in my face. It gives that radiance and freshness from within.
