Why You Need to Apply Sunscreen Everyday

Most of us don’t need convincing to apply sunscreen when we go on a beach trip or are mountain climbing, but when it’s just a regular day at the office or another day at school, do we really need to wear sunscreen? The short answer: yes. You’ll thank us when you’re older.

The long answer is even if we are spending hours of our day indoors, there are still UV rays hitting our skin. Here are a few things you might want to know:

1. Ultraviolet rays have nothing to do with the weather. So even when it’s cloudy outside, UVB rays still go through clouds. Only visible rays from the sun are blocked. Ultraviolet rays can cause sun damage and skin cancer, and is a major contributor to pre-mature aging. Before we move to the next points, here’s a quick way to remember your UV rays—UVA causes aging, while UVB causes burning.

2. UVA rays penetrate through glass. UVB rays can be blocked by glass and peaks during noon. UVA rays are consistently emitted throughout the day. So if you are working in an office with windows, you are still being exposed to UVA rays. And again, UVA rays cause aging. Wearing sunscreen can help you avoid premature skin aging.

3. The daily commute or running errands exposes us to UV rays. Yes, even if you live close to your school. Or if you’re just going out of your office building to buy lunch, or hit the ATM. These little pockets of sun exposure in the day are often forgotten. But you are still being exposed to ultraviolet rays during these moments. If you wear sunscreen daily, then you won’t have to worry about applying it each time you need to step out.

4. Fluorescent lighting, TV monitors, computers, and tablets count as indoor exposure to ultraviolet rays. Oh, these are present in your daily surroundings you say? Yup, we knew that. Even if you work from home and don’t have a daily commute or you’re staying in during your rest day, chances are you are still exposed to ultraviolet rays.

In case you haven’t noticed it yet, we are always exposed to ultraviolet rays which is why wearing SPF every day is a non-negotiable. The least you should wear on a daily basis is SPF 30. Anything above SPF 50 adds a negligible amount of coverage compared to what you are additionally paying for. So SPF 50 is enough. Here are some you can try, now that you’re convinced to change your ways:

1. Face Republic Super Screen Sun Gel SPF 50+ – It’s gel type so it absorbs easily and won’t feel sticky. Plus it’s got the maximum SPF grade you need!

2. Sun Bum SPF 30 Face Stick – It protects against UVA and UVB, and comes in a stick form so you can reapply it and bring it everywhere!

3. CosRX Aloe Soothing Sun Cream SPF50+ PA+++ –  A grade SPF protection, UVA and UVB rays included, and nourishes skin, too! No wonder these are sold out quickly!
