Tinted Moisturizer vs. Foundation: When to Use?

Tinted moisturizers and foundations seem like similar products at first, but a closer look will make you realize that each product has its own use, purpose, and benefit. If you’re confused on when to use each, read our quick guide below.

TINTED MOISTURIZER

What is it:

As its name suggests, a tinted moisturizer is a moisturizer—that’s tinted. In short, its primary purpose is really to moisturize and hydrate your skin, with coverage as an afterthought. Tinted moisturizers usually provide only minimal or lightweight coverage. It’s best to use if you want to pretend to “wake up like this” or go for the “’no makeup’ makeup look.”

When to use it:

No one can really dictate when to use which unless it’s your parent who provides you food, shelter, and education. Personally, if you’re one who doesn’t really need a lot of coverage on a daily basis (and if your workplace allows it) then use tinted moisturizers all day, every day!

Products to try:

This Tinted moisturizer with SPF practically has all the skin essentials you need! You can also try this CC Cream that smoothens and brightens skin, while moisturizes and covers dark spots!

FOUNDATION

What is it:

Foundation is an essential makeup basic, and also, as its name suggests, it’s the foundation where you build the rest of your makeup look on. The primary purpose of foundation is to give you coverage, conceal blemishes, even out your skin tone, and make you look as flawless as possible.

When to use it:

At formal events like weddings and debuts, it is most likely expected that you arrive with a full face. Not because they care about your FOTD but because, generally speaking, attending a formal gathering with a fully made-up face is a sign of respect and showing that you put in effort to look your best.

Another situation would be at job interviews. If the industry you’re applying to work for puts a premium on how well you present yourself (e.g. deals with lots of face-to-face client meetings or customer service), then it’s better to arrive with a flawless face.

Products to try:

Depending on your needs, you can try this lightweight foundation that mattifies and refines pores or this one that promises a high coverage that lasts for 24 hours. A fancy, chicly-packaged option is this liquid cushion foundation that’s super hydrating, too.
