Ace of Base: Perfecting Your Makeup

Creating the perfect base is easy with the right tools and products.

Step 1: Cleansing

Prior to makeup application, you need to make sure your skin is properly cleansed so that no oil, dirt, or grime will interfere with the formula of your primer and foundation. To do this, grab your trusted facial wash (we love gel types because they don’t dry out our skin) or a micellar water which attracts oil and manages to keep skin soft to the touch.

Our pick: Simple Micellar Water, P500

Step 2: Moisturize

Truth be told, makeup tends to cling better to skin that’s properly hydrated so make sure you apply a moisturizer right after cleansing so that skin stays plump, healthy and refreshed.

Our pick: Pond’s Age Miracle Day Cream Firm and Lift, P999

Here’s a cool pro tip for you—a foundation brush will make the job a lot easier! It essentially distributes the product much more evenly, and also won’t warm up your product like your fingertips have a tendency to do. This way, the product will stay stable, and will have a more consistent texture all throughout.

Our pick: Ellana Dual Head Retractable Stay Gorgeous Powder Brush, P799

Step 4: Blend and Pat

Blend in your foundation where it matters most. The areas where we need it most are the sides of the nose, chin, and under eye area. Concentrate on those key areas first, then blend out to the rest of the face afterwards. When you’ve got your entire face covered, use a sponge to thoroughly pat and press the product in—this helps to fill in pores, and prevent demarcation lines.

Our pick: Real Techniques Dual-Ended Expert Sponge, P450

Step 5: Set for Life

After using anything liquid (or cream), it’s important to use a powder to set everything in place. Grab a loose powder and lightly dust a tiny bit all over to keep your base from budging.

Our pick: Coty Airspun Loose Powder, P630
