How to Have Healthier Nails

By: Cat Juan Ledesma

Our nails go through quite a lot in a day. With all the reaching, twisting, writing, typing, washing, rubbing, and painting they handle, it’s a wonder they stay firm and strong at all. Here are some tips to give your nails a little more tender loving care, so they can thank you with good health.

Say Goodbye to Acetone

Our nails are our first victims of indecisiveness and can take on quite a beating with the array of nail polish colors we like to play with. Acetone-based nail polish removers have a tendency to strip nails of much needed moisture and make them more prone to being brittle or bleached. What’s that? Your nail salon doesn’t offer acetone-free alternatives. Bring your own.

Return moisture

One of the best ways to help nails take in some moisture is to give them a warm soak every often. Place a few drops of your favorite seed oil (olive, almond, rosehip, etc.) in a bowl of warm water with a slice of lemon. Leave fingertips in there until the water cools. Another option is to use a good hand cream making sure to get in between the cuticles too; you can opt to wear gloves at night to make sure the moisture really penetrates.

Give your Cuticles Love

Our cuticles are what help lock the nail in place and keep out dirt and bacteria. It’s important that they not be pushed, clipped, and prodded too much that they aren’t able to do the job nature intended for them. We recommend requesting that your nail technician to go easy on your cuticles and always be sure to use sterilized nail equipment.

Protect your Nails

If you do the dishes every night or the gardening, don’t forget to give your hands and nails some care by wearing gloves. Small steps like these can make a world of difference. Remember that often prevention is better than a remedy.
