Skin Care for the Changing Seasons

I’ll admit it. I am a little jealous of girls living in the northern hemisphere, the changing of seasons gives them an excuse to up date their wardrobe every three months. Living in the tropics, however is not without its perks. Skin looks best in humid environment because the high moisture content in the air helps keep skin hydrated and supple. It also keeps our skin looking young.

Our climate change from wet to dry season are relatively mild but we do have to tweak our skin care regimen a little bit to keep our skin in tip-top shape.

Dry Season

The harsh summer sun, and summer activities such as swimming by the pool or beach, tend to dry out our skin.

  • Keep hydrated. Don’t forget to drink at least eight classes of water a day. Stick to fresh fruit juices and coconut water. Try to limit coffee and alcohol intake as this tends to dry the skin
  • Wear sunscreen. We should be doing this all year long but most especially in the height of summer. Reapply every two hours. Don’t forget to use a lip balm with SPF as well.
  • Try to avoid being out from 11am to 3pm.
  • Use an after sun creme with soothing ingredients such as aloe. Also, use a water based moisturizer on your face.
  • Exfoliate entire body once a week.

Wet Season

People with acne prone and oily skin need to take extra care of their skin during this season because the extreme humidity causes pores to go into overdrive. The pores tend to open up and produce more oil.

  • When skin is oily, dirt tends to stick to it. Keep the pores clean by washing face with a non-comedogenic cleanser twice a day.
  • If you have very oily skin or are exposed to a lot of pollution, use an alcohol-free toner.
  • Moisturize. Having well hydrated skin prevents the pores from over secreting oil. If you have very oily, use an oil-free moisturizer.
  • Use a gentle facial exfoliant twice a week to keep pores clean and prevent breakouts.
