Many of us look far and wide for the perfect face mask in bright department stores with hefty price tags, but you’d be surprised to discover how the secret to better skin can be found in your humble kitchen’s pantry. Here are three ingredients worth checking out:

Honey

Did you know that honey never expires? Jars of honey have been found in thousand year old tombs of the Egyptian Pharaohs, just as fresh as when they were first placed. Honey is a natural humectant, which means it attracts moisture; it is also anti-bacterial and loaded with good-for-you anti-oxidants. Honey makes the perfect face mask or face cleaner in the morning. Simply rub on, leave for a few minutes then rinse off with warm water.

Baking Soda

Baking soda works quite well as a face mask to help lift impurities and excess oil from the face. Baking soda is a mild antiseptic and it also has anti-inflammatory properties, which makes it the ideal mask for someone with inflamed acne prone skin. Mix your baking soda with water, orange juice, hydrogen peroxide, or even honey to make a paste and place on top of your face for a few minutes till it dries. You can also gently exfoliate your skin with this mask before rinsing it off.

Apple Cider Vinegar

It may not have the nicest of smells, but apple cider vinegar makes up for it with its bounty of benefits. Its high acidity level helps slough off dead skin giving your face a healthy brightening effect. Its recommended that you don’t start with a diluted version by mixing a 3:1 ratio of water and apple cider vinegar till your skin can take a pure strength. Spread on with a cotton pad before bed and rinse in the morning.
