Can You Use Face Oils if You Have Oily Skin? Yes, Totally!

Here’s a shocking fact for you: Certain oils are good for oily skin! You heard that right. Chances are, if your skin is oily, you tend to automatically scour the beauty stores for products labelled “oil-free.” It may sound counter intuitive to add oil to an already oily face, but a handful of oils can actually balance out the skin’s sebum production (more on that later) and have a variety of other benefits for your skin. Conversely, using harsh products that combat oil and can dry out skin can cause your glands to compensate by producing more oil. There are oils that are light and non-greasy, and have smaller molecules that easily penetrate skin layers. Point is, if you have oily skin, you don’t have to be afraid of oils. Here are some ways to use oils that work wonders even for those with oily skin types:

While we appreciate how waterproof and long-staying makeup is especially after an eight-hour shift or a jam-packed night out, it can be a pain once we actually have to take it off. Cleansing oils can clean up all traces of makeup debris effectively—even the most stubborn mascara and concealer that seem to be embedded on your face! They also don’t dry out the skin like other cleansers do, and you can get tons of hydrating and softening benefits. Massage it onto a dry face and rinse it off completely. Follow it up with a facial wash or if you’ve gotten all the gunk off, you can even skip the face wash.

Some people might not see the need to use oil, especially if they are already currently using a moisturizer. But think of it in terms of the phrase “better together.” Using them in tandem, with the oil first and sealed in with a cream moisturizer, acts as a wonder combo that allows both products to do their job better. Oils serve as “humectants” that keep moisture from evaporating from your skin. You can also opt to mix the oil with the moisturizer before applying it to your face, making it more spreadable and easy to apply.

Suggested product: The Ordinary 100% Cold-Pressed Virgin Marula Oil (P900.00)

Rosehip oil is a chockfull of essential fatty acids, which calm and soothe skin and prevent inflammation. This oil is also a rich source of trans-retinoid acid, a natural form of Vitamin A, which dries out acne. But don’t worry, it won’t totally dry out your skin, because the fatty acids will prevent that. Think of it as a powerful retinol + moisturizer combo.

As mentioned earlier, oils can stabilize and regulate the overproduction of sebum by your oil glands. Oils mimic the skin’s sebum production, so your skin won’t see the need to produce excess oil, and you won’t end up being a reflective surface midday. A bonus effect: because of the reduced production of sebum, pores will appear smaller, too!

Suggested product: The Ordinary 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Moroccan Argan Oil (P650.00)

Argan oil is packed with extremely rich antioxidants, Omega-3 fatty acids, and Vitamins A and E. For centuries, the legendary beautiful Berber women of Morocco learned to extract this organic product from the kernels of the Argan tree. They noticed that their hands remained very youthful and wrinkle-free whatever age they were, and attributed this to the fact that their hands came in contact with the oils on a daily basis. Wrinkles tend to pop up when skin is dehydrated and crinkle up to show deep lines, whereas hydrated skin looks taut and plump. This liquid elixir hydrates the skin and prevents signs of aging, and is easily absorbed and non-greasy.

Suggested product: Herboristerie Bab Agnaou Moroccan Argan Oil (P1,450.00)

*Note: Not ALL oils are created equal, and some aren’t ideal for oily skin and can cause clogged pores, breakouts, or simply aren’t absorbed by the skin and therefore a waste of money and effort. Some of these are: coconut oil, sesame oil, palm oil, and mineral oil, and if you have oily skin, it is best to stay away.
