Soft Grunge: The New Sexy

By: Angela Lim

As sensual and inviting as Marilyn Monroe was, the timeless black liner and red lip are not the only ways to go about being sexy. It’s the dawn of bold colors, big hair, and even bigger personalities, so trash the image of heavy raccoon eyes or messy rock stars. Embrace the daring grunge look that is soft, edgy and chic without looking like a hot mess.

Often flying under the radar, it has been overlooked for seeming too dull and dark – even borderline scary. When done right, this look is nothing short of sexy. We’re talking about soft, clear skin, subtle smokey eyes, defined lashes, flushed cheeks, and pale lips. Channel your inner Mila Kunis and cop this look right now:

Skin

This makeup look is all about flawless skin and statement eyes, so it’s important to have a clear canvas for the main event. Prep your face with moisturizer and leave it for a few minutes, then apply your favorite makeup base or primer. Blend your foundation and concealer seamlessly, and seal it with a great loose powder.

Contour

We don’t want to bring in too much color, as the beauty of this look lies in the eyes being the focal point. However, we do want to accentuate our features, so go for a contour color in a grey-brown shade. Top this off with a light dusting of pink or peach on the apples of your cheeks.

Brows

We want to frame our peepers right, so defining our brows is a very important step. Brush your brows with a spoolie, then pick up your favorite brow product – whether pencil or pomade – and fill in to perfection. Finish off with a clear brow mascara to keep your hairs in place.

Eyes

Prep those lovely peepers with eye shadow primer. Next, pick up a pristine champagne color, and dust this over your lids. With lining your eyes, you don’t need to get the lines sharp and perfect. The beauty in this look is that it’s imperfect and messy. Choose your preferred charcoal black liner, and begin shaping your top lash line. When you move onto your bottom lash line, start at the ends of your eyes but stop midway to leave the tear duct area bare. With a smudging brush, cotton bud or clean pinky finger, smudge your liner. You’ll want to feather out the smokey effect or even dust a light grey shadow over it to add definition and keep it in place. When you’re happy with how it looks, curl your lashes and apply generous coats of mascara.

Lips

Opt for a nice, soft color on your lips. Whether you want your lips to be sheer, glossy, or matte is fine – just keep your color choice muted. Pale pinks, nudes, and peach shades complement your subtle smokey eye nicely. Blot, re-apply, and you’re good to go!
