Product Review: Besame Cake Mascara

By: Erica Paredes

Just as there are “bag” girls and “shoe” girls, there are also women who like to focus on eye make up, and those who prefer a bare face paired with a bright pop of color on their lips. I am definitely an eye girl, and lined eyes with loads of mascara is an everyday look for me. Like anyone obsessed with something, I am constantly on the lookout for the next best product.

I found Besame Cosmetics at a make up expo I attended a few months ago, and I was immediately drawn to their booth because the makeup artists attending to people were dressed like pin-up girls from the clothes they wore, all the way to their hair. Upon talking to them, I learned that the brand Besame was created by make up artist and cosmetic historian Gabriela Hernandez, an art, history and beauty enthusiast, who decided to take her knowledge to another level and create the brand. I was told that one of their best-selling lipsticks, Red Hot Red, is a replica of Marilyn Monroe’s signature shade. This, of course, piqued my interest even more!

Aside from their gorgeous lip colors and packaging, the Cake Mascara definitely caught my attention. Cake Mascaras were popular until the sixties when the modern mascara we know today came into the market. It’s a bit daunting when you first see it because it looks more like an eye shadow. But, once you start applying, you realize it’s simple as can be. All you have to do is either wet the mascara wand, or the product itself until you create a creamy, but not watery consistency. First coat will give you a natural look with a bit of oomph. Three coats, applied after each prior coat has dried, will create a more dramatic look that’s great for night, or for women who like to look like they are wearing false lashes all the time.

The other side of the mascara wand is an angled brush, because this product also doubles as an eye and brow liner. I am a fan of multi-use products so this one made it a winner for me. It is not waterproof the way I usually like my mascara, but it definitely works and makes me feel more glamorous than usual when applying. If you want super dark lashes, go for the Cake Mascara in black. If you want something more toned down, the brown will do just fine.
