Hair vs Humidity

By Cai Maroket

Typhoon season is upon us again and it’s that time of year when our hair is subjected to either getting drenched in the rain or getting frizzy or weighed down thanks to the incredibly muggy weather. It’s a major downer to have your early morning hair styling hard work get flattened out by the indecent amount of moisture in the air—and at this point, everybody should know that resorting to heat styling in this weather will just be a wasted effort, not to mention unnecessary damage to your tresses. So what’s a girl to do to manage a full head of hair waiting to go haywire the moment it meets the humid outside air? Here are a few ideas to help you throughout this season:

Don’t fight it: Unless you have pin straight hair (that’ll fall unbelievably flat for sure), your hair will follow it’s natural shape once exposed to enough humidity in the air. Save your energy and embrace your hair’s natural texture! Invest in a sea salt spray or texturizing spray to enhance the texture and add a little oomph.

Condition and control: Fight the frizz by using a leave-in conditioner, like TRESemme Platinum Strength Stay Soft Leave In Treatment, before setting with hairspray (we suggest something like Toni&Guy Hair Styling Casual Flexible Hold Spray so you don’t end up with helmet-like hair). Not only will this help you keep your hairs in place but it will also give your hair a little moisturizing love.

Skip a day: If you have the luxury of not having to take public transportation and not being exposed to pollution, try not to wash your hair every day. Use a dry shampoo instead. Not only will it suck up the grease and odors sitting on your scalp, it will also give your hair extra texture and will help your hairstyles hold longer.

Heat-free styling: Humidity shouldn’t deter you from getting playful with your hair, but since most hairstyles don’t hold well against muggy weather, go easy on your hair and skip hot tools. There are many hairstyling hacks available online, but here are some basic ones. You can also check out this post for more hairstyle ideas for the rainy season.

  • For medium length hair, getting surfer girl waves can be easy to achieve and can camouflage the frizz. When hair is still fresh from the shower, squeeze out excess water and work in some curling mousse. Afterwards, twist pieces of your hair outwards (make sure to twist each section tight and hold for a few seconds). Leave your hair like this to air dry while doing your makeup and shake them off before heading out the door. For good measure, spritz on some sea salt spray.
  • Braiding your hair is the simplest and most stylish way to keep your hair from getting out of control, especially if you have long hair. The variations in style are endless. Here’s a post on how to do a simple French braid. Also, if you sleep with your braids, you’ll wake up to beautiful, wavy hair. Just rake through your hair with your fingers or with a wide-tooth comb, seal with an anti-frizz product and you’re good to go.
