Glitter Polish 101

By: Ixi Castillo

There’s nothing like some shine & sparkle to add a little fun to your look.  Glitter nail polish is a playful way of adding some life to your regular nail polish since it works best brushed over darker base colors.

Here are a few things to remember if you are planning to give glitter nail polish a go at home:

  1. Before applying any product on your finger nails, wash your hands so you start with a clean canvas. Also make sure that your nails are completely dry before starting to paint them.
  2. When you are ready, brush on your base coat. This will protect your nails from yellowing and will help your nail polish stay on longer.  Follow this with your base color.
  3. Next, shake and roll your bottle of glitter nail polish between your palms. This will heat the polish, making all the glitter that have sunk to the bottom of the bottle come loose.
  4. Apply glitter nail polish in a thin coat by first dabbing a bit on the center of the nail and then spreading evenly with the brush.
  5. Finish with a top coat to seal in the glitter.

Once you’ve mastered applying your nail polish, you’ll then have to think of how to effectively remove it.

  1. Take a cotton ball and soak it with nail polish remover.
  2. Place cotton ball on the nail and wrap the finger with tin foil.
  3. Wait for 5 to 10 minutes before removing.
  4. Unwrap the foil and slide the cotton from side to side to remove the excess nail polish.
  5. Wash hands.

As much as it is lots of fun to paint your nails, remember that wearing nail polish for long periods and using nail polish removers can be very drying.  This can cause your nails become yellow, weak and brittle.  Make sure to give your nails regular breathers.  Always wash your hands and keep your nails clean and dry to prevent bacteria from growing under your fingernails.  Lastly, use a hand and nail crème to keep them moisturized—don’t forget to rub it onto your cuticles too!
