Bringing The Braid Back: 5 Fresh New Braids Every Girl Needs To Rock

By: Angela Lim

Nothing beats being in a style rut better than a new hairstyle. On days when your hair isn’t cooperating with you, or when you don’t have time to give your hair a good wash – let alone reach for a bottle of dry shampoo – doing your hair up in a braid does the trick. The understated elegance of braids has been a favorite of celebrities like Sienna Miller and Kiera Knightley, and it’s high time it becomes yours, too! To help you get into the braid of things, learn how to create the new styles here:

  1. The Fish Tail Braid

Start by bringing your hair into a ponytail. With this look, you can have your braid either strewn across your head like a crown, cascading down your back, or on the side. Split your hair down the middle into two sections. At one side of your hair, separate a small section from the outer edge close to your elastic band, crossing it over to the opposite side. Overlap just like you would if you were doing a regular braid. Reaffirm your grip on your hair to tighten the braid while holding both sections. Repeat by crossing a small section from the other side. Keep at it until you’ve covered the length of the braid you want, and seal with a clear elastic band.

  1. Sexy Side-swept Braids

Tease the top section of your head, applying a volumizing or texturizing spray to give it body. Set your crown in place with some strategically placed bobby pins. Start a French braid from the crown, and take it down to the side. To channel that “I just rolled out of bed looking flawless and now I’m ready to walk the red carpet” look, tug at your braid until it’s nice and messy.

  1. Braid-wrapped Bun

To get an elegant and sophisticated look, up your hair game by taking your fishtail and twisting it around your bun. Start off with two small fishtail braids from each side of your face. Leave those sections of hair untouched while moving on to create a bun like you usually would. After having the bun in place, wrap the braids around it, securing them tightly with a hairpin.

  1. Nymph Braid

Perhaps one of the most iconic hairstyles any magical creature struts is the Cersei Lannister-esque braid. As odd as it may be seeing “fairy” and “cersei” in the same sentence, the famous Queen Mother of Game of Thrones loved to rock this charming look pre-walk of shame. Start by parting your hair in the middle. Take a section of hair from each side, your thumbs starting from your forehead, twisting all the way past your temples – until the entire section has been twisted. Pin both sections to the back of your head. You can choose to braid the rest of your hair if you want.

  1. Corn-row High Pony

For a sexy and edgy look that’s sure to get those double taps on the Instagram, do a cornrow and pony tail hybrid. After doing cornrows that extend from your hairline all the way down the length of your hair, secure them with an elastic band. Finally, fix your braids into a high ponytail.
