Confessions of a Gen Z Beauty

Welcome to the world of Generation Z, a.k.a. where all of us under 22 are old enough to know better, but young enough to do it anyway. Known for being tech-savvy, future-focused, and progressive thinkers, society often confuses us for millennials due to our similar characteristics. But maybe this identity crisis of sorts is not only a misconception, but a good representation of our ability to fall in different categories while simultaneously putting our own spin to it.

Struggles of the Gen Z

With both the media and commercial markets creating platforms for the older generations, it’s not always easy to convince society that we too have a choice that’s worth listening to. Often called out for being “too young” and inexperienced” to voice out our opinions, representation is scarce over here in the Gen Z sphere. Just like millennials, our intimate relationship with technology and the Internet has fueled a desire to take advantage of the numerous platforms available to make our presence known. Though we are often discouraged and not taken seriously, the drive to speak out is a challenge we continuously and tirelessly fight.

No, we are not millennials

We get it—it’s easy to categorize everyone considered the “youth” as a millennial. But our label as the “Gen Z” is as important as remembering an individual person’s name—it gives a face to the things only we do uniquely. Research has shown that we are the most entrepreneurial age group, thus making us more hardworking and anxious. And yes, although both us and millennials have a good grasp on technology, first era Gen Z-ers can’t remember a time without social media, while millennials entered the workforce in the Great Recession period, meaning our history with the Internet differs from them.

The Gen Z Routine

We, the Gen Z, are a community of dreamers and achievers. We are constantly on the move, looking for the next goal to reach. Personally, like to start my day off by picking up my phone and updating myself on what I missed over the evening. I go through my to-dos, say a little prayer, then formally begin my morning with a shower. Next, I like to do some light make-up just to add some color to my face. Truthfully, I stay up late pretty often thus making me paler than I should be, so this is a must in my routine. Breakfast comes after, which, nowadays, consists of a sandwich and a fruit drink when I’m on the go.

On the other hand, my nighttime routine is a lot more flexible. I always do my schoolwork before going to bed, so depending on the time I finish, I decide if I can combine my 4-step skin care routine with a clay mask, or just sleep right away. Rest is an integral part to being a busy member of the Gen Z, so I always try to take advantage of my remaining hours after working continuously.

In the end…

Being part of the Gen Z is no joke—it comes with a lot of discourse with older generations in terms of trying to exercise our rights and speak our mind, underestimation, and general distrust for our capacities. People may not always believe in us, but I wouldn’t choose to be part of any other generation than this. Our resilience and persevering nature allow us to rise above the doubts and dictate our own future. Call us what you want, but we will not be fazed.

The Generation Z is a generation of revolutionary individuals, and from here on out, nothing can stop us from changing the world, one small idea at time.
