Classic vs Modern Bridal Hairstyles

TOP KNOT VS MESSY UPDO

When it comes down to bridal hair, there are way too many styles to choose from. Factors to consider are: the neckline of your gown, your wedding theme and your personal style.

The top knot is great for elongating the neck and showing off a strapless or spaghetti-strapped gown. It’s very princess-y, too. Its modern version is the messy updo, which looks like you rolled out of bed looking effortless and chic.

SIDE PART WITH HAIR DOWN VS MIDDLE PART WAVES

The side part with your hair down is great for framing the face and showing of your good angle. It also is a great backdrop to some fancy bling or earrings and works well with any neckline.

The modern version is your hair parted in the middle with alternating waves that go in and out, which is a sexy update to the classic bridal hair. Middle-parted hair is instant contour for the cheeks and long layers pushed to the front have a slimming effect.

HALF UPDO VS SIDE SWEPT HAIR

The half updo is a bridal hair favorite at receptions. Usually, bridals who want to let their hair down opt for this look for after the ceremony. The modern version is the side swept style, made popular by Hollywood millennial brides and the red carpet. You get both an updo and your hair down, so your face isn’t entirely exposed. It’s dramatic and super glam.

THE FRENCH TWIST VS THE LOW CHIGNON

The French twist is a bridal hairstyle reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn and I imagine a bride sporting this with long satin white gloves and a tiara. It really makes a bride look mature and sophisticated. Perhaps that is why brides nowadays go with the low chignon instead, to avoid looking too matronly or older than their years. The low chignon is perfect for keeping things simple and picture-perfect.

THE TEXTURED UPDO VS THE BRAIDED UPDO

The textured updo made popular by Jessica Alba was once in the modern bridal hair category. Now it’s being replaces by the braided updo. After all, braids have made a huge comeback and seems to be the hair trend that doesn’t want to die. It has crossed over to bridal hair as well. The braided updo is great for showing off the cheekbones and perfectly groomed eyebrows.
