Why You Need to Exfoliate and How Often

There really is such a thing as too much of a good thing, and sometimes we can get a little too eager about stripping our skin of dead skin cells that we’re doing our skin more harm than help. Here’s a friendly guide on the different types of exfoliation tools out there and how often you should use them:

Face Brushes: These are those sonic frequency brushes that you use together with your facial soap. Many brands claim that they can be used daily (some even twice a day), but we highly recommend you take it slow. Start with once or twice a week and see how your skin reacts. If your skin looks healthier using it that often, then don’t add on. If your skin still feels a little dull and isn’t feeling red or raw than up the number a bit. Remember to religiously keep the bristles clean as per instructions.

Washcloths: The same way that you have to keep the bristles of face brushes clean, washcloths should be pristine before touching your face. Choose a brand that is fairly soft and not too thick so they dry properly before being used again. Every other day should be more than enough and don’t use the same one twice.

Chemical Exfoliants: Whether this is from fruit or lactic acids, in a mask, toner, or cream, it doesn’t matter. Chemical exfoliants need to be used sparingly and once a week should be more than enough for your skin to get their benefits. It doesn’t hurt to do a patch test on your cheek before proceeding with your entire face and neck.

Scrubs: These comes in an assortment of products whether salt, sugar, micro beads, seed kernels, etc. My personal favorite is sugar, honey, and olive oil for my body. Be careful to choose a scrub especially made for your face as some of these natural ingredients can leave little scratches that can’t be seen with the naked eye. There’s also quite a bit of talk these days about micro-beads and the harm they cause the environment, so be mindful of that when choosing your products. If you opt to take this route, once or twice a week is more than enough.
