Top 7 Skin Care Tips I Learned from My Mom

As a 2nd grader, my mom used to host a tutoring session for me and my older sister every Saturday afternoon. For those few hours, she acted as our own personal teacher—lesson plan and all. Fast forward to more than 10 years later, she’s still our family’s favorite teacher today, but this time, she’s graduated from books to all things beauty.

With a mom as youthfully radiant as mine, I’ve come to learn some great tips on taking care of my skin. This upcoming Mother’s Day, I’m sharing with you all the tried and tested hacks that proved to me that, truly, mother knows best.

1. When in doubt, wash your face.

If you’re pressed for time and can only spare a few seconds for skin care in the bathroom, prioritize washing your face above anything. No matter how important toning, moisturizing, or spot treating may be, everything begins with a well-cleansed face to rid yourself off the day’s dirt. You’ll never go wrong going back to the basics.

                                                                      2. Never fall asleep with make-up.

The cardinal skin care sin: getting a little too comfy in your cosmetics. After a long day at work, my mom has never failed to make a trip to her vanity closet right before bed to strip her skin from all the caked in makeup. A fresh face before bed is a forever go-to for her!

      3. Cold creams are lifesavers.

There’s no such thing as hoarding too many cold creams, according to my mom. You’ll never see her without a face full of lavender-scented goo lathered all over as she uses it to both wipe off her makeup and moisturize each spot simultaneously!

  4. Oldies but goldies.

Trust me” my mom would always tell me about trying new food, critiquing outfits, and of course, suggesting new skin care tips. When choosing her products, she always makes sure to stick to brands that have proven their quality over the years. She’s unfazed by beauty fads beckoning their customers in with aesthetically pleasing packaging—instead, she stays loyal to holy grails, and tried and tested products since day one.

5. Natural remedies > anything.

My mom is a believer of home remedies. From DIY lash serums to acne treatment, she’s busted out new and effective recipes along the years that have worked like magic. A few years back, her and my sister whipped up an Apple Cider mixture that did wonders for drying out pimples! That just goes to show that we should always be 100% aware of the ingredients in our favorite products so we can learn to safely and affordably recreate natural versions ourselves.

6. Wrinkles start young.

While some older women may only begin their anti-acne treatments at the first signs of them, my mom has always reminded me not to contort my face too much to keep the skin from forming lines. Not only is this effective in decreasing wrinkle formation, it’s free, too!

7. Dirty hands are your worst enemy.

But at the end of the day, no amount of nifty tips and tricks at maintaining a good skin care routine will work if we don’t have clean palms and fingers to apply everything with. My mom always reminds me not to touch my face too much, especially after being in dry and polluted environments, to keep the dirt from transferring.
