I swear that the day after I turned 30 I noticed that my skin had changed. It could be that I may have partied a little too hard the night before or that I never paid that much attention, but the glow was noticeably missing. Since then I’ve been on a quest to reclaim my youthful complexion and the answer came to me in the form of skin brightening serums. Before you freak out, skin brighteners are completely different from skin lighteners. The latter actually bleaches the skin giving the user skin that is a few shades lighter. I recommend staying away from these type of products as they are banned in Europe because of high percentages of hydroquinone which can increase skin cancer risk.

Skin brighteners work in three ways. The first is it evens out skin tone by reversing UV skin damage. It does this by curbing melatonin production in the skin which results in sun spot and age spots fading. Skin brighteners are loaded with a cocktail of anti-oxidants and vitamins that help keep pigmentation at bay. Another benefit is that you will notice a more uniform complexion because skin brighteners fade acne and facial scars. It also reduces flare-ups by having anti-inflammation ingredients such as aloe. And finally, it helps eliminate skin dullness by speeding up cell turnover. Brighteners contain alpha hydroxy acids, very mild fruit based acids, which is a great for skin exfoliation. The dead skin cells get sloughed off quicker exposing the luminous, radiant new skin.

Skin brighteners are the first step in your morning skincare routine. Use it right after washing your face. The put your day time moisturizer after. Since the purpose of brighteners are to reduce sun damage, you must put on sunblock if you want to see significant improvement in your skin.
