How Often Should You Treat Yourself to A Facial

We asked top dermatologist Amy Patdu to share her thoughts on the importance of facials and how often you need to come in for some professional help to keep your skin looking fab. “Generally, for any skin problem, I recommend having a facial with light exfoliation using fruit acid to soften the skin and then followed with a diamond peel every 10 days to 2 weeks,” explains Dr. Patdu.

“I believed though that facial preparation is essential as it cleans the skin, soften the epithelial layer and allows opening of skin channels to allow absorption of nutrients from the creams that we apply,” she says.

For acne prone skin: Dr. Patdu prefers using a special exfoliating product like lactic acid found in goat’s milk in your facial to gently remove dry skin, which acne causing bacteria like to hide in. She also recommends having a skilled technician gently extract any blackheads or pimples to prevent them from getting worse and further scarring the skin.

For pigmented skin: For an uneven skin tone and those needing a bit of anti-aging, Dr. Patdu recommends a special product called the AGAS. “It works by healing any inflammatory reaction and at the same time the skin absorbs 100 percent of the whitening product to even the complexion,” she says.

For aging skin: For skin that needs some rejuvenation, she says that AGAS will also work well paired with other treatments like laser light. It requires at least 8 weekly treatment to see significant result.

It’s important to keep your skin well protected in between facials. Because a good portion of your top dermis is often exfoliated to reveal newer skin, sun protection is a must. I recommend Avene Mineral Cream: a high spectrum SPF 50+ sunblock that’s gentle enough for all skin types.
