A lot of factors can contribute to facial skin redness. Although the occasional flush post-workout or post-facial is common, sometimes, especially with fairer skin tones, excessive facial redness should be given special medical attention. Symptoms to look out for: skin especially on the cheek area that appears to be blotchy, has noticeable dry patches, a burning, stinging sensation, is itchy or you notice small white head like bumps. Different factors can contribute to facial redness like excessive heat, alcohol consumption, reaction to chemical skin treatments, irritation, sensitivity, allergic reaction to food, products, etc. If the redness is excessive and exceeds a 24-hour period you must seek a dermatologist to determine underlying factors. But with the occasional redness I swear by the following steps that I just do myself at home.

First you want to discontinue using any new product you applied to your face whether it be skincare or makeup prior to the facial redness began usually skin sensitivity to a new product you applied that can be too harsh for your skin is the

Next you want to make sure you thoroughly cleanse your face with a gentle and calming milk facial cleanser (Avene) to remove all impurities from your face and previously used products on your face without further irritating it.

Rinse off cleanser by spritzing with a mist of Avene Themal Spring water spray and gently wipe off with a facial tissue. Next you want to use a soothing preferably all-natural and organic calming mask at home. Honey has great anti-bacterial properties as well as skin-saving antioxidants. Another option is to use yogurt, which also has calming properties when used on the skin. You can also try aloe vera gel. I then apply a softening toner to my face to hydrate my skin and apply a generous layer of Avene Skin Recovery Cream Calming Formula which works wonders every time.

If you need instant relief, try Avene’s Redness-relief moisturizing protecting cream with SPF 20 to replace your daily moisturizer before applying your makeup. It has a slight green tint which helps with minimizing the appearance of facial redness immediately.

Things to remember:

When your skin shows sign of redness, avoid very hot water or excessive direct sun exposure on the face and also skip any exfoliating products for at least a week. Excessive exfoliating can cause facial irritation and redness.

Avoid introducing too many new products to your skin in a short period of time. Give your skin at least a week or two to adjust to any new skin/makeup product and if irritation does not occur only then should you introduce something new.

Stay away from products that contain alcohol for this can also irritate the skin. The more gentle you are with your skin regimen and by using the right products to suit your skin type, facial redness need no longer be a beauty issue you need to worry about.
