Boy in Beauty: The Most Basic Skin Care for Your Bae

Fellow boys and girls in beauty, let’s admit it: we’re guilty of justifying excessive amounts of time and money spent on makeup and skin care. We immediately jump on rationalizing (even if we really don’t need to, TBH.) a makeup purchase worth thousands of pesos, or spending an hour in the bathroom because of our extensive pamper sessions that we do nightly. But not everyone is as easy to convince of this lifestyle.

In particular, I’m pertaining to our significant others, bored to death while waiting for us to get ready or to check out our carts, that might not see the value of this degree of hygiene. But of course, we want them to take care of themselves, even if it’s not as extra as how we do it. We wouldn’t want our partners looking crusty next to our gorgeous selves in our nth IG story together now, do we? If they aren’t already convinced by my article on skin care basics and my optimized 6-step routine, let’s simplify it even more. Here’s how to help your boyfriend or girlfriend make the most out of the most basic skincare routine ever.

Okay, so I highly, highly recommend double cleansing. Like, if you haven’t tried it, you should. It is life changing, and your pores will thank you. But if your boo can barely be bothered to use a separate product outside the shower to wash their face, maybe let’s not push it too much. For your next monthsary, get them a hardworking foam cleanser that will wash off all the grease and smoke from your Samgyup date and help keep their skin clear.

One of my tried and tested products is the CosRX Salicylic Acid Daily Gentle Cleanser which, as the name suggests, contains 0.5% Salicylic Acid that gently exfoliates the skin’s inner layers, helping prevent breakouts. Another new find of mine that I’ve been loving recently is the Shiseido Senka Perfect Whip. It contains hyaluronic acid that helps the skin retain moisture, but what I love most about it is the unique, smooth, icing-like texture of the foam. Because of the smaller bubbles in its lather, it feels gentler but cleans deeper than traditional lathers.

Most people are more familiar with the kind of toner that you apply using cotton pads, so it might make more sense for them to do the same. In this case, since we’re skipping oil cleansing, I’d suggest doing it that way too, since it becomes an extra cleaning step. The cotton will pick up any dirt and oil left behind—just make sure they’re using a toner that’s alcohol-free .

You might want to get your SO on the Zenutrients Calamansi & Witch Hazel Toner, because aside from being an alcohol-free and oil-controlling toner, it’s local, inexpensive, and all-natural. Another inexpensive local brand is OMO! White that has five different toner variants meant to address different issues. The Hypercleanse Magic Water Beauty Toner is alcohol-free and contains activated charcoal that make sure pores are clean and skin is glowing!

Most beauty-unsavvy people associate good skin with clean skin. While, yes, they are partially correct, they often forget that good skin also entails hydrated skin. Moisturizers aren’t only needed by those with dry skin, but also those that are more on the oily side, as having moisturized skin can help keep oil at bay because your skin won’t feel the need to overcompensate. Get your boo’s hydration game on point by introducing them to moisturizers that absorb quickly so they can go about their day hassle-free.

Aloe Vera is a moisturizer ingredient that you can never go wrong with, because not only does it hydrate, but also calms down skin irritation. The Cathy Doll 99% Aloe Vera & Snail Serum Gel introduces snail secretion filtrate into the mix to help repair the skin along with hydrating it—and it’s only P250! But if either of you are in a splurging mood, the CosRX Honey Overnight Mask, despite its name, is a pretty good lightweight daytime moisturizer that is hydrating, irritation-soothing, and pore-decongesting thanks to the formula’s 87% Propolis Extract.

Beauty junkies say it with me: NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER FORGET YOUR SUNSCREEN! EVER! Aside from protecting your baby’s skin from sunburn and the sun’s harmful UV rays that cause skin cancer and triggers premature skin aging, it prevents all the hard work of convincing them to finally get on a skin care routine—which they so unenthusiastically eventually obliged to doing—go to waste.

Get the most bang for your buck with Calyxta Beauty Award-winning Super Screen Sun Gel SPF50+ from Face Republic, because not only does it protect the skin that you’ve spent money on, it’s also a very hydrating product—(pretty sure they’ll be happy to be able to skip one step in the morning!)—and contains a lot of plant extracts with other great skin benefits. You know what? Why not get the Calyxta Beauty Awards Simmer and Shimmer Holy Grail Set so you can treat yourself to a highlighter, too. *wink*

Now that you and your bae’s skin care game are on fleek, the next challenge is to find bomb af lighting that best shows of your glow for that #CoupleGoals selfie you’ve always wanted. As for me, the next challenge is to find myself a jowa. Any leads?
