Product Review: Agave Healing Oil Treatment

By: Alyanna Martinez

I have always been at war with my hair. I have naturally curly hair which I embrace when I am in colder countries but I despise when I am in humid countries like the Philippines which turns my hair into a frizzy, fluffy mess. When thermal reconditioning, (now known as rebonding) Keratin treatments, and permanent blowdrys entered the market a few years back, I thought my prayers had been answered. I always loved the look of my hair when it is blown out smoothly but hated that it would start to curl up again once I started to sweat. So the promise of perfectly smooth hair all day, everyday was a real gift. I suffered all 9 hours sitting at the salon chair with the promise of ending up with my dream hair. I did this twice a year for so many years and I was very happy with the results the first few years. I had smooth, flat and shiny hair as promised.

The trouble only came when my regrowth would start to show and my curls would come back with a vengeance.  Year after year, the technique and formula of the products improved and the time it took to get the service done also took longer. Here now is where the problem arises. From all those years of trying out the latest hair services whether it be coloring or smoothing, it has left the length of my hair very sensitized and brittle. One service was so bad that 50% of my hair shaft was left over fried and frizzy right after the smoothing treatment and I had no choice but to chop off 8 inches of my precious long locks.

Since then I have lessened my hair smoothing treatments to just once a year and have laid off hair coloring or any other hair service as well. The damage my hair incurs is from regular blowouts, hair ironing and curling for events and shoots. Aside from this, I also spend so much time and money trying out products that all promise to heal and treat my sensitized hair. I have had some success with some products but it is still not enough to reverse all the years of heat and chemical damage my hair has incurred.

The Agave Oil Treatment was of course something I was very excited to try. I washed my hair like usual, towel-dried it and gently combed through, applied a small amount of the oil onto my hands, warmed it up between my palms and spread it onto the length and ends of my hair avoiding the roots because it tends to get oily very easily. First thing I noticed is its pleasant fruity almost candy-like smell to it. Also, after applying it to my hair I was not left with very annoying oily hands which is why I generally try to stay away from oil based products.  I left my hair to dry naturally and the end result was indeed smooth but not straight hair but also incredibly light feeling and soft. As a finishing product I also tried it on completely dried hair. Results were the same. My hair did not look or feel weighed down or oily – – just soft and smooth with a natural sheen finish.

The product is also said to be used as a pre-treatment before using heat styling tools so I assume that it can also act as a heat protectant when you heat style  your hair. After a few days using the product daily I cannot say I have noticed a drastic long term difference compared to all other hair oils. But, I want to give it more time and in a few months of using this healing oil, I will know for sure if it did in fact heal my hair. But I do know for a fact that on the first few times I tried it, it worked perfectly as a finishing step to add shine to your hair or as an added step to tame down hair that tends to frizz.
