How to Use Bronzer Properly on Very Pale Skin

By: Cat Juan Ledesma

Bronzers, when used properly, can give your skin a sun-kissed glow with no evil UV rays necessary. But it’s not always easy to play with this beauty tool, especially if you have pale skin that can make bronzers look orangey or like dirt you forgot to clean off. Here are some bronzer application tips for girls on the lighter side of the spectrum:

Stick to Your Foundation Shade: Don’t listen to advice requiring you to choose a foundation one to two shades darker than you would normally wear as your base. This will look extremely unnatural, especially on those who were born within the cool range of skin tones.

Look Sun-Kissed Not Sunburnt: Those with pale skin need to stay away from bronzers that have a red tinge to them. Look for those that have a light brown or copper brown tint and always test it out in broad daylight before purchasing.

Glow from Within: To make your bronzer look a little more real, try this layering technique: place your foundation and brush on your bronzer on the spots where the sun would touch, then place your powder. Placing your powder after your bronzer makes the warmth of the bronzer look like it’s coming from inside your skin rather than just sitting on top. This is also a great trick for cheek tints. You can also go even deeper and place your bronzer before your foundation.

Invest in Good Tools: Applying bronzer with your fingers or a sponge is an almost guaranteed way to have your bronzer look fake and streaky. Very light applications, like those you get with a fan brush, are a great way to apply bronzing powders for an “I just spent the weekend on a white sand beach sipping piña colada” kind of look.

Matte and Shimmer Bronzers have Different Uses: Use a matte bronzer like you would a contouring stick, placing it where shadows are normally found in your face: close to your hairline, in the cheekbone area, and under the jaw line. Shimmery bronzers, on the other hand, can be used where the sun would naturally hit your face: the cheeks, bridge of nose, and top of hair.
