How to Pull Off Colored Eyeliner/Mascara

By: Alyanna Martinez

We all have that one or two fun or bright colored makeup product in our collection we all bought on a whim thinking we could rock it like models in magazines or least use for Halloween. Switch up your everyday neutral makeup routine once in a while and you may surprise yourself with a flattering new and fun look. The trick is in the balance. You don’t want to overdo it and end up looking like you were trying too hard or you are attending an 80’s themed party.

  • First, decide on the occasion you will use it for, keeping in mind that there are certain occasions where a bold new makeup look is not as welcome in the boardroom or at church.
  • Then, select a color of your choice. I love green, blue or purple because these will work on different skin tones and eye colors. You want to make sure your bold new look is occasion appropriate. The perfect time to sport these brights are parties or going out at night to make your bold new look pop in photos.
  • Next, decide which part of your face you want to make a statement for. For eyes you will want to keep your lips nude and neutral so all focus is on your eyes. I love a good creamy gel eyeliner pencil for the summer time or for a beach event blue looks really fantastic.
  • If you will be using it for an evening out, green will look great with a tan. If you are not feeling that wild, a bold a dark purple shade is still subtle enough not to shock you but at the same time a bold color that is flattering to brown eyes and keeps it fun.
  • Keep your eyelid base a neutral shimmery color if it’s colored mascara you want to rock. Just apply your usual mascara like always then before your mascara dries, top it off with a generous coat of colored mascara in green, purple blue or even with glitters and this will just give the right amount of hint of color to make your eyes look dramatic and fun.
  • If you are feeling bolder, you can rock a subtle colored eye with bright colored lips as long as you keep the rest of the face as neutral as possible.
