French Girl Beauty In Five Steps

By Erica Paredes

What is it about La Parisienne that almost every woman makes it her mission in life to obtain that perfectly imperfect, slightly disheveled but sexy look? A lot of them seem like they are born looking that way, with hardly a trace of makeup on but still oozing with appeal. Now that I live in Paris, I think I am slowly but surely discovering the little secrets to getting that understated “I woke up like this” beauty that I see everywhere here. Here’s how, in five easy steps:

1. If you are going to spend, do so on skincare. Moisturizers, oils, cleansers and toners—your first step to getting not only the French girl beauty look, but the only way to get ANY makeup to look awesome. Remember that a beautiful painting starts with a good canvas.

2. Scrimp on the foundation—apply none if your skin is already good, and instead highlight your cheekbones instead. Apply concealer underneath the eyes (pat gently, don’t rub!) and anywhere else you need it. Remember, less is more!

3. Forget the eyeshadow and focus on getting the perfectly smudged and winged line. Choose a dark shade, and don’t limit yourself to black—a deep navy or aubergine will work just as well. Apply your kohl liner, and smudge as close to your lash line as possible. Mascara optional.

4. Choose a lip tint that can double as a cheek tint or vice versa. Don’t go full coverage and definitely no crazy colors—stick to a few shades deeper than your natural lip color.

5. If you can’t get a natural bedhead (in other words: you have a hard time looking Beyonce-esque straight out of bed) use a texturizing sea salt spray then put your hair in a high bun. Remove when ready to go out and I promise you will get the volume and perfectly imperfect hair that is quintessentially Parisienne.
