Eye Concealer 101

By: Cat Juan Ledesma

If you left me on a deserted island with only three beauty products, concealer would definitely be up on my list. I love the way a good concealer has the ability to make your face look instantly brighter, make a pimple vanish, and hide any dark marks or spots. But it’s important to know that not all concealers are created equal and eye concealers are often the trickiest to get right. Here are some tips while searching for the perfect one:

Opt for creamy or liquid

In case you haven’t noticed, your under eye area tends to be a little drier than other parts of your face. With that in mind, it’s often better to stay away from stick concealers, which might make the area look cakey by midday.

Prep the skin first

Since the area around the eyes is often the first to show fine lines, it doesn’t hurt to lightly moisturize the area with a primer before placing your concealer to avoid making the lines more prominent. Make sure the moisturizer is well absorbed before applying your concealer or you run the risk of having it slide right off.

Application is key

Many of you might be surprised to discover that the right way to apply under eye concealer is like an upside down triangle going all the way down to the bottom of your nose. This method makes the color blend more seamlessly with the rest of your face instead of having you look like a reverse raccoon. It also helps make the face look more lifted.

Choose the right color base

To cover the blue veins that cause a greyish hue under your eyes, choose a concealer with a yellow or peach base. A pink-based concealer often looks fake and won’t do as well a job of getting ride of the bluish tint to your skin.

Dab away

It’s highly recommended that you apply concealer with your ring finger to make sure the pressure isn’t too strong. Also dab gently till blended instead of swipe.

Setting is super important

Eye concealer has a tendency to crease after a few hours. Light pressing a tissue after applying to soak any excess oil will help. Also be sure to lightly dust with a setting powder to lock it in for the day.
