How To Make Mascara Work For You

By: Cat Juan-Ledesma

“I make sure never to leave the house without putting mascara.”

We’ve all heard these popular lines stated in one way or another by a celebrity during an interview. And, in the past, I couldn’t help but wonder how a swipe of pigment, waxes, and oils on your lashes could make such a big change to your face. But surprisingly, it really does.

The Egyptians were the first to record the use of mascara, which was made with kohl and used to rim their eyes and help protect the soul from evil spirits. Many etymologists believe that the word “mascara” actually comes from the Spanish language meaning to “mask” or “stain”. But we all know that mascara does more than just that. For thousands of years, women have been using it to look fresh and bring their looks together.

New formulations are created every day with ingredients that promise to lengthen, thicken, and curl your lashes making sure that every blink gives your windows to the soul the attention they deserve. Here are some tips for you to make the most out of your magic wand.

Collect Then Select

Not all mascaras are created equal and many makeup artists will tell you that they have more than one type in their beauty kits. Some brands are known for lengthening, others for curling, etc. So it doesn’t hurt to invest in a few that you’ve heard good things about and play with mixing them for the perfect first and second coat.

Wiggle Wiggle

Get the most out of your mascara application by putting the wand as close as possible to the lash line and gently wiggling it as you make your way to the tips. This helps guarantee that all the lashes are evenly coated.

Invest in a Lash Comb

It might look a little medieval, but a lash comb helps by separating the lashes, removing clumps, and just making any mascara formulation adhere better. Try to find a lash comb that’s got metal teeth instead of plastic ones.

Don’t Forget Your Bottom lashes

Many people forget that your bottom strands need just as much love as your top ones, so be sure to give them a nice little coat of mascara as well. Simple hold the wand vertically and gently swipe and wiggle till they spread out too.

Condition and Nourish

Once your day is over and your lashes have done their job, reward them by being sure to remove all traces of mascara. Oils like Virgin Coconut and Jojoba do the trick very well and help keep your lashes shiny and healthy for another day of battle.
