Mani-Pedi Rules We Love to Break

By: Xeng Zulueta

1. Fingers and toes should be the same color / match

This is the rule I love breaking the most! Why? Because I learned through the Bliss Spa in New York that your finger and toe nails should NEVER be the same color. Why?

First, there are so many colors to choose from! Besides being all matchy-matchy is so over. Now is the time to wear colors which clash or complement because it looks and feels fun. Why limit yourself to one shade? The second reason is that the skin on your hands and feet are not the same. One also might not be as nice as the other. Take my hands and feet for example: I have nicer feet than hands because of what I do for a living. Therefore my hands have more veins than my feet. Donning the same nail polish color will bring attention to both body parts and might make the flaws more obvious when the color is uniform. It makes sense right?

2. Square Nails are the best shape universally

Nope, not true! The shape of your nail can change time to time. I also consider the size and type of the hand. For example, I feel that pointy nails elongate a pudgy or small hand. And square nails add edge to slender fingers. The possibilities are endless!

3. Nude toenails and thong sandals/Bare feet are a no-no

Another rule I like to break. On the contrary, nude toe polish and bare feet go well together because it elongates the leg. You know the effect of a nude pump to a woman’s leg? Yup! It has the same effect with nude nail polish: legs for days.

4. Long nails look the best in any shade of nail polish.

Again I beg to differ. If your job involves using your hands (as I do) then here’s where having short nails comes in handy (no pun!). I find that bold colors look really fashion forward on short nails. Too long nail length might resemble talons or a witches finger, which are both ok for….uhm Halloween.

5. One color, all five fingers or toes.

Nails are the best accessory we already own. You can jazz them up or down with so many possibilities, and more acceptable than wearing experimental makeup let’s say in the work place. You can coordinate or complement any outfit and occasion with any nail color combination. Limitless hues to choose from!
