Creative Updos

By: Cat Juan-Ledesma

Summer is definitely upon us and there are few things worse than feeling the nape of your neck get all sweaty in our humid, tropical weather. Here are a few creative ways that you can pull your hair back and feel a little cooler without losing some style.

Loose French Twist: Pull your hair up like you’re about to do a ponytail. Twist your strands over your index finger, twirl it around the finger, pull it up towards the scalp and put it in place with a bobby pin.

Fishtail Bun: Start with your standard fishtail braid; pull it up like you’re going to do a ponytail. Twist it around till it makes the prettiest bun.

Low braid: One of the easiest. Make a ponytail, then tuck your hair under and up through the loop. Split the ponytail into two and continue tucking along downwards and through the loop till everything is tucked in. This style looks cute even when messy.

Knotted Bun: This is great for long hair. Make a ponytail, split sections into two and make them into a knot like you would a shoelace, secure the knot with pins, make another knot, and secure with pins again.

Chopstick bun: Make a ponytail with your hands, flip all your hair over the hand holding the ponytail, twist hair tightly till it coils into a bun, slide the chopstick into the loop on the back of your hand then flip and stick into the hair closest to your scalp. This take a lot of practice, but looks pretty cool once done.

Head wraps: Add a bit of color to your look by taking your favorite lightweight scarf and wrapping it around your loose bun or braid. There are tons of tutorials online on various ways you can make this look work.

Calyxta’s very own Amanda Padilla does a great video tutorial for a messy bun. You can watch it here.
