Natural Remedies To Calm Skin Redness

By: Angela Medalla Yeo

A common skin problem that we encounter is skin redness. I get it right after a hot shower, and it is not a pretty sight! Some people get it when they wake up in the morning, after trying out a new skin product (hello ladies with sensitive skin!), and even after an intense workout! I am often tempted to just slather on a good amount of foundation and concealer, which isn’t the best solution because it will just make the skin more irritated. So before you whip out your green color correcting concealer from your make-up arsenal, let’s try to treat the situation with remedies from mother nature herself.

The common causes of skin redness are dry skin, sunburn, eczema, acne, and rosacea (broken capillaries or dilated skin blood vessels). These various causes all have different treatments. Consult your dermatologist if it’s a serious problem that you incessantly encounter. When our skin is red, it means it is inflamed. So for occasional skin redness, here are natural remedies we can do at home to calm our skin and make it less irritated.

Honey

Apply honey directly on the face. Honey is a powerful anti-inflammatory so it will reduce skin redness. It has anti-bacterial properties so it is also good for those pesky red pimples.

Oatmeal Mask

Mix oatmeal with water to make a paste and leave on face for 10 minutes. Oatmeal will soothe the skin because it is a natural anti-inflammatory, it will also keep the skin hydrated.

Diet

Avoid eating spicy food and drinking alcohol as these will cause dilated skin blood vessels that make the skin red. Also, keep your skin hydrated by drinking plenty of water.

Green Tea

Brew green tea and chill it in the fridge. Once it is cool, soak a wash cloth in the tea and squeeze out excess. Leave wash cloth on the face for a few minutes. The cool temperature combined with the anti-inflammatory benefits of the green tea will help calm and soothe the skin.
