Hair Extensions: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

By: Cat Juan-Ledesma

Hair extensions are a good way to give your hair length and volume temporarily. Especially for brides-to-be with naturally fine, limp hair, these can be considered hacks for achieving beautiful, voluminous wedding day hair. Here are some basics about using them that you should consider before investing.

The Good
If you’re not squeamish about the idea of using someone else’s hair as your own, then using human hair extensions is really the way to go. Human hair extensions are often pricier than their synthetic counterparts, but you can style and dye them as if they grew from your own scalp to give you a more natural look. If you’re planning to wear them long term, then go for Remy Hair (also known as virgin hair), which has been carefully selected from root to tip. If you want to opt for something longer lasting, you can opt for strand or weft extensions. This is when small sections of hair are connected to your natural hair by weaving, heat fusing, or gluing the hair together. Remember that high quality hair extensions aren’t cheap, but they usually offer you beautiful results. Pure Remy hair extensions can last you 6 to 9 months or longer.

The Bad
If you’re looking for something more affordable, you can opt for Non-Remy extensions. Non-Remy means that the hair was collected through a number of donors and put into big piles, so the growth pattern will definitely be different. A silicone coating is placed to give the strands a temporary shine but that will wear off after a number of washes, leaving you with matte, tangle-prone hair. Non-Re my hair extensions can last between 3-6 months before they start to get coarse and brittle.

The Ugly
For a quick temporary fix, you can opt for synthetic clip-ons. These are good for a photo shoot, where no one will be seeing you up close, or for an event for just a few hours. It’s recommended that you still go to a hair professional to get the right color match and have these clip-ons put on properly. There will be nothing worse than you smiling your way past the velvet ropes, only to have your extensions begin to slide off before the night is over. *shudder*
