Awesome hairstyles to match your prom dress

Resident Calyxta celebrity hair stylist, Jet Babas, shared his expert tips on how to find the right hairstyle that suits your prom gown best.

Prom is a coming-of-age moment that girls dream to be perfect in all aspect— Dream Date, Perfect Dress, Flawless Look. We understand that prepping for the big day is quite the task! To help you, our gorgeous Calyxta readers, find the perfect match (no, we’re not talking about your date!) between your dress and hairstyle, we asked for advice from hair guru Jet Babas, who’s styled the locks of Vanessa Matsunaga, Bubbles Paraiso and Jess Connelly. Here’s what he suggests:

Strapless dress: Ponytail

“The best way to emphasize the details of your strapless dress is to tie up your hair in a ponytail. This sleek yet playful up ’do adds visual balance to your bare shoulders. It exudes femininity. So the key is to avoid hiding all the locks in a tight bun.”

Backless gown: Low bun

“If you opt for a low back then you need to choose a (sort of) messy low bun. The whole idea of wearing a backless frock is for you to show off the intricate details of your gown and your flawless back. Ask your stylist to give you a clean up ’do. The trick, though, is to keep the hairstyle trendy and dainty.”

Halter top: Side-swept braid

“A gown with a halter neckline is quite tricky to pair with. This type of dress displays your shoulders but also attracts attention to your neckline; hence, the visual imbalance. You can’t wear a tight bun because it will show how bare your shoulders are. You can’t wear your locks down because it will hide your pretty neckline. So, for a gorgeous balance, go for the easy-to-wear side-swept braid.”

V- or square-neck gown: Loose side waves

“The most common hairstyle that matches your elaborate and low necklines is a loose side wave. Wearing your hair down to the side creates an impression of a classic feminine look yet still fun and flirty. It also doesn’t take away the attention from the details of your dress.”

Asymmetrical and one-shoulder dress: High ballerina bun

“Again, the whole idea of matching the hairstyle with your dress is to highlight the beautiful details of the frock you wear. With intricately designed asymmetrical and one-shoulder dresses, it is important to remember that the attention must not be taken away from the dress. So hide your mane in one tight and high up ’do, but keep it sleek and gorgeous with a chic ballerina bun.”

High-neck gown: Messy up ’do

“If you want the perfect match for your high neckline (think turtleneck dress), then you must consider a messy high bun. By pulling your hair into a simple, sleek up ’do, then you’re stealing the attention from your stunning gown.”

Gown with spaghetti straps: Beachy waves

“The sophisticated beachy waves add more flair to your look when you wear dresses with thin straps. It’s fashionable, fun and age-appropriate, too, so go ahead and ask your hairstylist to give you this fab hairdo.”
