Dry Skin Care Essentials

By: Amanda Padilla

Attention, people with dry skin! I know how painful, uncomfortable, itchy and unsightly dry skin can be, I’ve been a card-carrying member of this club since birth. After years of trying all sorts of products and remedies to fix this problem, I’ve come to a singular conclusion- as annoying as dry skin is, it is an easy one to fix. The secret? Consistency. I’m going to list down exactly what you need to be doing everyday even when your skin gets better, and your dry skin woes will be a thing of the past.

– Let’s start with your shower habits. Limit the number of showers you take to once a day because water is extremely drying. Stop with the hot showers, cool or lukewarm is best for dry skin. Wash using a soap free, moisturizing cleanser.

– Before patting yourself dry, slather a natural-seed oil all over the body. This will lock hydration into the skin. Another option is to use a body moisturizer for dry skin that has oatmeal in it, nothing works better. Pay special attention to dry patches, knees, elbows, feet.

– Restore moisture back into the skin in layers. Use a hydrating toner on your face, followed by a serum, then a rich moisturizer. If I feel a little dry after a few hours I might add a little more moisturizer.

– Use a hydrating face mask at least twice a week.

  • Keep lip balm handy at all times. Have one by your bedside and another in your purse.
  • For extremely dry and cracked feet, apply petroleum jelly all over them then put socks on. Leave them on while you sleep. Repeat this every night until your feet feel restored. Petroleum jelly works great on chapped lips as well.

– Include Vitamin E, Omega-3 fish oil and Flaxseed into your diet.
