Real Bride: Katrina Calderon-Maquilay

Where was the wedding held? What made you opt to go for a destination wedding?

The wedding was held in our hometown, Iloilo City. We had our wedding there as most of our relatives live in Iloilo. It’s nice to have a wedding with our family and friends around since my husband and I are both based in the UK.

How was it like planning a destination wedding? What were the biggest challenges and how did you overcome them?

Two of the biggest challenges that we had while planning the wedding were the time difference and not being physically present since we were staying abroad.

How did you choose your suppliers?

Most of our suppliers are our friends and schoolmates. We chose to have them as it was easy for us to work with them and we were comfortable telling them what we wanted for our wedding.

How did you coordinate with guests and suppliers?

For the suppliers, we had our wedding coordinator and family do all of the meet-ups, meetings, and etc. as we can’t be physically there. For the guests, I coordinated with them mostly through Facebook. It’s really one of the easiest ways to keep in touch with them.

What’s the inspiration behind your wedding look? Did you have any hair and makeup pegs?

I just wanted to have an elegant and classic wedding look. I always believe that simplicity is beauty. Yes, I did have my hair and makeup pegs. During the wedding ceremony, I wanted to have an updo hair with a beautiful hair accessory and a natural makeup look. During my reception, I had long loose curls and hair extensions to add more volume.

Who designed your wedding gown, and how did you come up with the style? How long did it take to create or find the perfect wedding dress?

My wedding gown was designed by Ram Silva. It was always my dream to have a mermaid-style wedding gown with elegant details. After so many online consultations with him, he finally designed a gown which was beyond my expectation. He made a gown with a long detachable train so I can have a different look at the reception. When I saw it, I didnt have any second thoughts and I knew right there and then that was the perfect wedding gown for me. I think it took him two to three months, and three fittings for him to finish creating the gown.

“I always believe that simplicity is beauty.”

What was in your wedding day makeup kit/pouch?

I didn’t have a wedding makeup pouch since my makeup artist was there all the time in case I needed touch-ups.

What were the preparations you did for your skin prior to the wedding day? Did you go to a skincare center regularly? What kind of services did you have done? Is this something you would recommend to other brides-to-be?

I just did my regular skin care routine by just washing my face and applying moisturizer. A few days before the wedding, I went to my dermatologist and had a facial treatment. The night before the wedding, I just applied a facial mask for some extra hydration.

“Always moisturize my skin, drink plenty of water, and have enough rest.”

What was the best beauty advice you received that helped you prepare for your wedding?

The best beauty advice I received is to always moisturize my skin, drink plenty of water, and have enough rest.

How about in terms of fitness? What did you do months before the wedding to stay in shape and make sure your wedding dress fit perfectly? Did you enroll in a gym or fitness center? What was your diet like?

I still eat the things that I wanted but in minimal portions so I could still fit in my wedding dress.

Did you have your nails done? If so, where? Would you recommend this nail salon to others?

Yes, I had a home nail service since I just wanted to feel relaxed and worry-free the day before the wedding.
