Real Brides: Mitzie de Leon-Ty

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

My name is Mitzie de Leon – Ty. I am a Creative Director and an Ultimate Frisbee player. JC, my husband, and I met because of Ultimate Frisbee. I believe that I am very practical, a multi-tasker and a planner. For our wedding, we opted not to get a wedding planner (just on-the-day coordinators). My extensive event experience allowed us to do so. Even on the onset, we already knew what we wanted, who to hire, which services to book, where to spend and save, etc. I thought we could very well plan our wedding, of course with reasonable timelines and careful preparation. Naturally, I had a vision of how I wanted my wedding to be like and I just had to share it with my husband and get his inputs. We both agreed on a simple, casual, and very family-oriented ceremony and celebration.

What’s the inspiration behind your wedding look?

I was inclined to have a simple fuss-free makeup look, which will last long.  I personally did not want to do touchups or a look change before the reception because it will just add waiting time for the guests, so I really wanted my makeup to last the entire day. I searched for makeup pegs online and the look I wanted gravitated towards a (slightly) dewy look, with earthly, natural tones.

Who designed your wedding gown, and how did you come up with the style? How long did it take to create or find the perfect wedding dress?

My gown was off-the-rack. I had pegs already so it sort of helped me in terms of direction. Prior to deciding, I tried many different gowns (cuts, silhouttes, and all). It actually took a while before I finally zoomed in to my top three gowns. Like I said, I’m very practical and I really had no intentions of splurging on a gown that I will only wear once (but of course, I still want it to be stylish and beautiful). So, after trying out a lot of gowns, I finally decided on a simple wedding dress (with minor alterations and added embelishments) from the shop.

How did you choose your hair and makeup artist? Did you have any hair and makeup pegs?

My makeup artist is Ria de Guzman. She’s a good friend and a seasoned makeup artist for weddings, TV commercials, and movies. I’ve seen her hands work wonders since we’ve used her (and her team’s) services for some of our projects in the office. She was originally a video editor before she transitioned to makeup so an eye for beauty (and on-cam register) was already inate and evident in her. Even if she already did my makeup during several occassions, I still had a trial makeup with her (and others) just so I’m sure to find ‘the one’. I showed all of them my peg and eventually, I reached the decision to get her.

What lip color did you choose for the wedding day?

I actually teased my makeup artist that I wanted a touch of pink somewhere in my look (as I’ve never been that girly-girl kind of gal) and so my lip color was that ‘touch of pink’. I think it was Mac’s Please Me and it lasted the whole day (and night).

What was in your wedding day makeup kit/pouch?

I just had an oil control blotter. My makeup artist assured me that that is all I need (and I trusted her or else friendship over! Hahaha!) Seriously, she assured me that the makeup settles as time goes by. I think the key is to trust your makeup artist because they know their craft more than us. It also helps to be honest with her/him on whatever concerns, questions, etc.

What were the preparations you did for your skin prior to the wedding day? Did you go to a skincare center regularly? What kind of services did you have done? Is this something you would recommend to other brides-to-be?

I regularly go to my dermatologist, Dra. Aileen Limjoco. I had my last facial a week before the wedding (but this time, there was no glycolic peel involved – we didn’t want to risk iritation/peeling). I just had a relaxing gentle facial. I would recommend a visit to your dermatoligist because all brides would want a close-to-perfect skin on her wedding day. I was lucky not to have any breakouts but my derma warned me that if ever I did, call her and don’t self-medicate.

What was the best beauty advice you received that helped you prepare for your wedding?

Sleep. Eat. Hydrate. Relax. Repeat. As brides, we don’t have to stress about all the minute details. Some things, you just have to let go off and delegate. Most brides prepare their weddings many months prior or even years, so don’t sweat over small stuff – it will really take a toll on your skin and your whole body. To quote my ex-boyfriend (now husband), “Chill, let us enjoy this day.”

“Sleep. Eat. Hydrate. Relax. Repeat.”

How about in terms of fitness? What did you do months before the wedding to stay in shape and make sure your wedding dress fit perfectly? Did you enroll in a gym or fitness center? What was your diet like?

I train twice a week so that’s four hours of cardio every week and we sometimes have two to three 60-minute Frisbee games on weekends. I swore not to do a crash diet so I just gradually lessened my carb intake. I ate more fruits and veggies also, and made sure I was always hydrated. I have an erratic schedule so I just did free home workouts via YouTube. JC and I also did work outs together on our free time, which was so much fun. I’m very competitive, so it pushed me to work as hard as he did. Haha. He was my motivation.

Did you have your nails done? If so, where? Would you recommend this nail salon to others?

I usually go to Salon De Matt in Pioneer which is near my office (I know, I’m such as Tita!) but I swear by their services! Their staff are very attentive and thorough. The whole experience is pretty straightforward which I personally like.

What was your biggest takeaway from your wedding day? Do you have any beauty-related tips you’d like to share to upcoming brides?

By all means, enjoy the day! It is the D day after months of preparation so just relax and savor every minute. Let the people you assigned to do their job and focus on more important things – the ceremony, your family and friends, and as cliché as it may sound, your husband. True radiance comes from within so, smile and be happy as you walk towards a very important chapter of your life.
