For one, it’s thinner, which is why our lips have a natural pinkish flush from the blood vessels underneath. Second, they actually don’t have any oil or sweat glands to protect it from the environment. This is why your lips need a little more love and why thousands of tubes of lip balm are sold every second of every day all over the world. Here are some tips to prevent chapping and flaking and to make sure your lips get a moisturizing kiss for all their hard work.

• Exfoliate the flakes away: The first step to getting softer lips is to gently remove the dry skin on the surface. One of the easiest ways to do this is to mix a little coconut or olive oil with sugar and gently rub in on your lips in a circular motion.
• Look for key ingredients: Get products that have high moisturizing ingredients like glycerin and hyaluronic acid, which are humectants that attract water in the air. Other ingredients that are worth looking into are shea butter, vitamin E, lanolin or oils such as jojoba, sunflower, olive and coconut.
• Protect your lips from the sun: The skin on your lips is more prone to burning from the sun than the rest of your face. Be sure that your everyday lip balm has an SPF of at least 30 or higher to prevent burns or flaking.
• Water is your best friend: Dry lips are often one of the first signs of dehydration. Be sure that you’re getting an adequate amount of water throughout the day. Skip the soda or sugary iced tea and opt for good old-fashioned H20. It’s better for your health.
• Take advantage of sleep: While in slumber, you have less chances of smacking your lips together and rubbing off moisture. Take advantage of this time by slathering on a healthy amount of lip balm to give your lips a good boost before the day. I personally like spreading it even slightly outside my lip line to keep the skin around the area well hydrated as well.

• Take a breather. Do something that makes you relax like a gentle yoga class. Treat yourself to a massage or get a spa facial.

• Tea Time. Tea, especially green tea, is packed with anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce redness and blotchiness from the skin. The ritual of preparing a cup can be calming as well.

Planning your wedding can definitely be stressful, especially the nearer the big day gets. Here are some common manifestations of all that stress and what you can do to remedy them the night before and for long-term after your wedding.

THE PROBLEM: PUFFY EYES

• THE CULPRIT: Water retention. Multiply that by two if you are a salty eater and if you are PMS-ing. Multiply by two again if you are stressed and sleep-deprived.
• THE INSTANT SOLUTION: Clamshells. Submerge five polished or smooth clamshells in ice for 15 minutes. Remove clamshells from icy water and slip the tip of your finger snugly into the opening of each shell. Trace the outline of the eye gently to reduce any puffiness. Retains temperature better than any cucumber! Less messy than a cold tea bag!
• THE LONG-TERM SOLUTION: Piling up concealer and foundation will only draw more attention to the undesirable. Practice doing your makeup with a light hand and under 5 minutes tops. The more you touch your skin (with fingers, a brush or a sponge) the more tired it will look. Curl your lashes, do 3 to 4 coats of mascara and up the rosy blush on the apples of the cheeks. It’s not the amount of makeup you put, it’s where you put it to trick the eye of the beholder.

THE PROBLEM: DARK UNDEREYE CIRLCES

• THE CULPRIT: Lack of sleep. If it runs in your family, multiply by two if you sleep 6 hours or less every night.
• THE INSTANT SOLUTION: Color correcting concealer. You want to start with a cream concealer that has an orange hue to it. Orange cancels out the tinge of blue that gives under eye circles that dark color. Apply a concealer or foundation that matches your skin tone. If you have chosen a cream, don’t forget to set with a translucent powder to set everything in place. The key here is to be light-handed as I have discussed under ‘puffy eyes.’
• THE LONG-TERM SOLUTION: Knowledge is power, so know what is causing the dark circles. If you are prone to allergies, such as sinusitis or allergic rhinitis, make sure to always have a non-drowsy antihistamine to nip it at the onset. Furthermore, know what is causing your allergies. Most of the time it’s dust or food or both. Since you cannot control dust, know which food causes the problem. For me, it’s wheat and gluten. Allergies and the common cold make dark under eye circles worse. Is it hereditary? Ask your dermatologist to prescribe you some retinol with your eye cream. And don’t forget the SPF. Under-the-eye discoloration is also caused by history of sun damage.

THE PROBLEM: DULL SKIN

• THE CULPRIT: Lack of sleep. Your skin builds new cells between the hours of 10pm and 4am. If you miss this window, then that explains why sleeping in until lunch time does not do a thing.
• THE INSTANT SOLUTION: Get your blood pumping! A 5 to 8-minute brisk walk on the treadmill or jumping jacks in place will boost circulation. A 2-minute facial might help too. Massage your face while cleansing and plump up the skin with moisturizer. Blot any excess moisturizer with one ply of facial tissue prior to make up.
• THE LONG-TERM SOLUTION: Reset your body clock. Sleeping between 10am to 4am is vital. If your job keeps you up at night, invest in weekly oxygen facials and diamond peels. What you want is for blood to circulate. You also don’t want dead skin to pile up. You can also do daily facial massages with facial oil and using quick upward strokes mixed in with light pinches to bring color back to the face. You can do this 2 to 3 minutes prior to bedtime or upon waking. Instead of the usual moisturizer, use a serum for more intensive overnight treatment while you get some z’s.

Among all the spa treatments available, this is my favorite. I don’t like the sticky feeling of oil or lotion and I also have a tendency to bruise easily so this is perfect.

3. Processed food: Found in canned goods, hot dogs, instant noodles, etc. Contains unhealthy fats and carbs which cause acne!

4. Greasy food: Stuff like chips, deep-fried food, fast food and margarine. The trans-fatty acids in these boost hormones that produce acne.

The good

1. Fatty acids: Wild salmon, cod, flaxseed and almonds, among others. These foods help retain water

and soothe stressed out skin.

2. Whole grains: Brown rice, wild rice, barley. The fiber content flushes out toxins from the body.

3. Vitamin B6: Found in cauliflower, sunflower seeds, walnuts and avocado, these foods keep hormones

in check.

4. Any fruit: High in antioxidants which help maintain skin health.
