Hair Color for Every Skin Tone

By Cat Juan Ledesma

If you’ve often wondered why your hair stylist prefers to see you in daylight, it’s not just to study your hair’s health up close but more importantly, get a clearer picture of your skin tone to see how your hair color can best complement it. Here are some helpful tips for your next coloring visit:

Fair Skin (Amanda Seyfreid/Julianne Moore)
Fair skin with a pink undertone can play with lighter shades like strawberry blonde, platinum, and honey. Extremely fair skin can also experiment with auburn shades to give off that redhead look.

Medium Skin (Giselle Bundchen/Katie Holmes)
A medium shade to the skin with a warm undertone can go for light golden brown shades with or without highlights. If you have warm skin tone with lighter eyes, you can also opt for a reddish hue.

Olive Skin (Jessica Alba/ Kim Kardashian)
Olive skin is quite flexible and can take darker chocolate shades or even almost black locks like Kim K’s. Espresso browns are also very flattering, especially after coming from the beach.

Dark Skin (Rihanna/Zoe Saldana)
Those with beautiful dark skin can play with deeper shades but in the cooler ashy palettes to help the colors pop. You can also play with darker more striking reds if you’re looking towards making an impact when you enter a room.
